**Principal Accountabilities**
- Provide strategic direction and policy and operational advice relating to research at JCUS to the University community, senior management, and key decision-making bodies such as Academic Board, Education Committee, Research Committee, senior executive staff (EMG), JCUS Board and TFI Board.
- Support the Deputy Vice Chancellor & Head of Campus Singapore, Campus Dean, senior executive staff, including Associate Deans and Directors of Research Centres and Institutes to enhance the research culture of JCUS and to develop and maintain a staffing profile that positions the University for the future, and contributing to the development of academic staff, including the provision of advice in maximising funding for research.
- Direct and prioritise the review, development and implementation of policies and processes that will enhance the University's research performance, monitoring changes in policy and practices affecting research at the national and international levels.
- Contribute to the effective and efficient strategic planning, leadership, management, and operation of the research infrastructure ensuring the achievement of organizational objectives and programs, including oversight of the budget, and ensuring recommendations, advice and guidance lead to continuous improvement. This includes working closely with the Division of Research and Innovation at JCUA.
- Contribute to the development of the JCUS Research Plan, including identifying and supporting research initiatives and strategies that promote JCU’s Strategic Intent.
- Establish, maintain, and promote collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders across the JCUS and JCUA communities, and JCUS’s collaborating institutions with particular emphasis within the Singapore context.
- Promote a partnership approach within areas of responsibility by providing effective, leadership, management, mentoring and professional development, (including performance review), establishing a culture of teamwork, transparency, and openness, maintaining strong communication channels at all times.
- Utilise technical knowledge, interpersonal skills and creativity and operate with considerable autonomy, exercising a high level of responsibility to make decisions and resolve a diversity of complex issues which arise, or are delegated from the Deputy Vice Chancellor & Head of Campus Singapore.
- Ensure business risks are identified and managed through effective risk management strategies and operations.
- Actively develop and implement strategies and processes that meet the University’s objective to be administratively light, designed to reduce the administrative burden which impacts on academic staff.
- Pursue research opportunities and demonstrate growth in a personal research profile.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
- Lead and promote a culture that ensures that WH&S legislation is enforced across all areas of the Research Office and that staff have an understanding of their responsibilities in this area.
- Lead, support, and promote the inclusion of sustainability initiatives in all aspects of operations, including supporting the principles of and engaging in the commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

**Generic Accountabilities**
- The Dean Research is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies, and decisions of the JCUS Management and Board, understand and comply with the Statutes and Rules of the University, and other appropriate University authorities, and comply with all policies and procedures documents.
- The Dean Research is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University Singapore WHS policies, procedures, and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations.
- The Dean Research is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.
