The Shipowners' Club is a mutual insurance association. We offer Protection & Indemnity (P&I), Legal Costs Cover and associated insurances to smaller and specialist vessel owners, operators and charterers around the world.  Building on over 170 years of experience, the Shipowners' Club provides tailor-made insurance packages for each operator according to their particular need.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Underwriter to join our Underwriting team on a permanent basis. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to expand their career in the underwriting sector, with a drive to develop your knowledge and skills. You must have strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with our Members and colleagues across multiple locations. You'll be one of the first points of contact for colleagues in our London, Luxembourg, Singapore, Greece and Hong Kong offices.

Role responsibilities:

​

You will work in our Underwriting team, underwriting the Club's business and providing liability solutions to meet the operational needs of the Members. With support and training from the Underwriting team, you will:

​

• To ensure the correct assessment of risk in accordance with the underwriting guidelines set out in the Underwriting Procedures Manual.
• To fully adhere to the Underwriting Procedures Manual and all processes therein.
• To ensure that high levels of service to Members and brokers are achieved and maintained, including prompt and accurate issue of Members' documentation.
• To develop and maintain relationships with Members and Brokers to ensure the retention and development of the portfolio for the mutual benefit of the Club.
• To identify, attract and develop new business opportunities that are of mutual benefit to the Association.
• To continually monitor and analyse the performance of business within the portfolio, highlighting and addressing areas of concern that require action.
• To ensure all outstanding premium is paid prior to binding of renewals in conjunction with the finance team
• Responsible for approving and ensuring the correct issuance of blue cards.
• To share knowledge, information and experience across the Underwriting team.
• To develop the skills and knowledge required for the effective performance of the role by participating in and actively contributing to training and development activities.
• To ensure sanctions screening has been undertaken on Members, other named parties and all vessels, and any hits resolved, prior to binding cover or processing MTA's

• Comprehensive knowledge of underwriting, including P&I, LCC, PA, and MKT covers, and the ability to apply this knowledge across designated risks.
• Strong understanding of the Association's Rules, Plain Language Policies, additional covers, and their structures, including contractual indemnities and insurance requirements.
• Skilled in risk assessment, rating application, and determining poolable risks and the need for reinsurance.
• Ability to interpret and communicate contractual and coverage issues clearly to Members and Brokers, and negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes.
• Proven relationship-building skills, with the ability to nurture Member and Broker connections and confidently market the Club to new business opportunities.
• Practical knowledge of the IGA, pooling agreement, and the Club's AMP/CRM systems.
• Commitment to underwriting business that supports the mutual benefit of the Membership.
