Position Summary
The Sr/Staff Mechanical Design Engineer in Illumina's R&D department will lead and contribute to the development of new, industry-leading genetic analysis platforms for life sciences and clinical markets. The engineer will be responsible for designing DNA sequencing equipment that includes complex optical, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and software sub-systems. The engineer will participate in and coordinate cross-functional teams, develop plans, perform analyses, and innovate new technologies.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uncover product requirements and translate them into subsystem specifications.
  • Design precision electro-mechanical and fluidic mechanisms.
  • Work in concurrent, cross-functional teams.
  • Actively seek input from stakeholders across disciplines.
  • Manage outsourced design and manufacturing relationships.
  • Compare performance and cost of design options using data-driven analysis.
  • Perform mechanical and thermal analysis of subsystem/system designs.
  • Create schedules and manage actions to meet milestones.
  • Develop risk analysis, test plans, and execute verification testing of subsystems and systems.
  • Ensure smooth transfer of new products into manufacturing, track issues, and implement resolutions.
  • Propose and investigate new architectures, technologies, and products to support Illumina's portfolio.
  • Thrive in a dynamic environment, meet milestones, and overcome barriers to achieve results.
  • Willingness to travel to the US for work purposes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in biomedical instruments, biological assays, and genetic analysis equipment is preferred.
  • Experience in FDA-regulated markets is a plus.
Education and Experience
  • BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field with >8 years of industry experience.
  • Experience in product development, transfer to manufacturing, and documentation.
  • Proven track record in designing robust electro-mechanical systems, including imaging, motion control, fluidics, and thermal control.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles, tolerances, GD&T, FEA, and design for manufacturing/assembly.
  • Experience with various manufacturing processes and electromechanical component selection.
  • Strong project management and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in SolidWorks CAD and mechanical FEA software.
