Job Description:

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine is inviting applications for a Senior Lecturer position on the Educator Track in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The Department teaches medical, dental, nursing and life science students at both undergraduate and graduate levels (more information on the Department is available at The appointment will be on a contract basis for 2 to 3 years, with the possibility of extension based on performance.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Senior Lecturer will be responsible to the Head of Department and will work closely with the Education Directors to make valuable contributions to the overall excellence of education in the field of Microbiology & Immunology. The primary role of the Senior Lecturer entails providing exceptional education in various formats (i.e. lectures, tutorials, laboratory hands-on practical classes) to train undergraduate and graduate-level medical, dental, nursing, life science students. He/she will be expected to show teaching achievement as evidenced by positive impact on student learning as well as commitment to collegial sharing of his/her work within the local educational environment.

The successful candidate will be a champion for innovation and entrepreneurship in online education, educational technology, continuing education and training (CET), or other aspects of medical and health professions education. The Senior Lecturer will be expected to compete for independent extramural/intramural education research funding, participate and publish scholarly research in Microbiology and Immunology education. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to service to the Department and University as assigned by the Head of Department.

Qualifications

The applicant should have:

  • PhD or MBBS (or equivalent medical degree) with relevant postgraduate qualifications, registrable with Singapore Medical Council.

  • Potential for development as an outstanding educator;

  • Interest in innovation and entrepreneurship in education and/or scholarly research in education;

  • Approximately 5 or more years of teaching experience (preferably at Lecturer level, but experience as Teaching Assistant/Instructor may be considered on a case-by-case basis) and evidence of impact in higher education settings required.

Criteria for appointment will include some or all of the following;

  • Prior experience in either basic or applied research on Microbiology or Infectious Diseases.

  • Proficient understanding of fundamental Microbiology, including key concepts of pathogens and their related infectious diseases.

  • Familiarity with the latest advancements in applied microbiology, specifically in the development and application of diagnostic assays, vaccines, and antimicrobial therapies. This knowledge should be implemented effectively in teaching materials.

  • Knowledge and/or interest in the interactions between pathogens and hosts that contribute to or modulate the development of human diseases (e.g. immunological responses and microbiome interactions).

  • Effective design, delivery, supervision and assessment that focus on the students' learning process.

  • Innovative course design and/or delivery and/or assessment (including use of technology to further these ends, where applicable); and

  • Reflective and professional approach to teaching and student learning.

  • Working together with colleagues to develop courses, make improvements to the curriculum, and engage in activities to raise scientific literacy in Singapore and globally.
