Key Responsibilities:
Planning and Delivery
- Design and implement engaging EAL lessons that are differentiated to support students with varying levels of English proficiency.
- Incorporate both the Cambridge International Curriculum and WIDA (World-class Instructional Design and Assessment) standards into teaching and assessments.
- Utilise a range of teaching methods and educational technology to support language acquisition, including multimedia, collaborative projects, and individual work.
- Conduct baseline assessments of students' English language proficiency upon entry.
- Monitor progress through formative assessments and adapt instruction accordingly.
- Re-assess students at the end of each term to evaluate progress and inform future instruction.
- Provide detailed reports to parents regarding student progress and areas for improvement.
- Work closely with classroom teachers to provide targeted language support for EAL students across different subject areas.
- Develop resources and strategies to assist mainstream teachers in differentiating their lessons for EAL learners.
- Engage with parents to ensure they are informed of their child's progress and provide suggestions for supporting language development at home.
- Stay current with research and best practices in EAL teaching, including the use of WIDA standards.
- Participate in school-based professional development programs, contributing to the wider school community.
- Work with school leadership to continually refine and improve the EAL program.
- Attend school meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and other events as required.
- Contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school as needed.
- At the end of each term, conduct a comprehensive reassessment of each EAL student's progress, both in terms of language acquisition and academic integration.
- Provide written reports to parents detailing progress, challenges, and areas for development, as well as recommendations for continued support.
- A degree in Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
- A recognized teaching qualification, preferably with a specialization in EAL or ESL (e.g., CELTA, DELTA, PGCE).
- Experience teaching EAL or ESL to primary or secondary students, ideally within an international school setting.
- Familiarity with the Cambridge International Curriculum is preferred.
- Experience with WIDA standards and assessments is a significant advantage.
- Proven track record of supporting diverse learners and adapting teaching strategies to meet individual needs.
- Strong understanding of English language acquisition and effective strategies for supporting EAL learners.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and parents.
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness, with the ability to work effectively in a diverse, international school environment.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively, balancing teaching and administrative responsibilities.
- Ability to use technology to enhance language learning, including the use of online resources, multimedia tools, and educational platforms.
- A collaborative approach to working with colleagues and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
The Perse School (Singapore) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All candidates will be subject to rigorous safeguarding checks, including reference checks, an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, and verification of qualifications and employment history.
As part of our commitment to safeguarding, all staff are required to uphold the school's safeguarding policies, attend regular training, and promote a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Any gaps in employment must be explained, and candidates should be prepared to discuss their approach to safeguarding in education as part of the recruitment process.
