Job summary:

Technical Grooming Skills:

  • Bathing & Drying: Proper techniques for wetting, shampooing, conditioning, and thoroughly drying with low-stress methods (e.g., force dryers on cool settings).
  • Brushing & De-matting: Safely removing tangles and mats without causing pain or injury, using appropriate tools like de-shedding tools, combs, and mat splitters.
  • Haircut Techniques: Executing various trims, from sanitary and lion cuts to breed-specific styles, with clippers and scissors.
  • Nail Trimming: Precisely clipping nails without cutting the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail).
  • Ear Cleaning: Gently cleaning ears and identifying signs of infection or mites.
  • Sanitary Trims: Clipping hair around the hindquarters for hygiene.

Cat Handling & Behavior:

  • Low-Stress Handling: Using calm, confident restraint techniques to keep the cat secure and minimize fear and anxiety.
  • Feline Body Language: Expertly reading cat signals (ears, eyes, tail, posture) to anticipate stress, fear, or aggression and adjust handling accordingly.
  • Patience & Composure: Remaining calm and patient with nervous, aggressive, or elderly cats.

Safety & Health Knowledge:

  • First Aid: Knowledge of basic feline first aid for minor cuts or reactions.
  • Health Recognition: Identifying common skin conditions, parasites (fleas, ticks), infections, or abnormalities that require a veterinarian's attention.
  • Safe Tool Use: Maintaining and safely operating sharp grooming tools (clippers, shears) on a moving animal.

Client Communication:

  • Consultation: Clearly discussing the groom, setting expectations, and understanding the owner's concerns and the cat's history.
  • Aftercare Advice: Educating owners on maintenance brushing, nutrition, and home care between grooms.
