Location: Singapore, Singapore
In fast changing markets, customers worldwide rely on Thales. Thales is a business where brilliant people from all over the world come together to share ideas and inspire each other. In aerospace, transportation, defence, security and space, our architects design innovative solutions that make our tomorrow's possible.
Thales established its presence in Singapore in 1973 to support the expansion of aerospace-related activities in the Asia-Pacific region. Throughout the last four decades, the company grew from strength to strength and is today involved in the primary businesses of Aerospace (including Air Traffic Management), Defence & Security, Ground Transportation and Digital Identity & Security. Thales today employs over 2,100 people in Singapore across all its business areas.
**Position Summary**:
- The escalating impacts of climate change have given rise to more frequent extreme weather events like intensifying cyclones and devastating floods, with the equatorial regions particularly affected. Countries in the equatorial regions would benefit from more accurate meteorological models to anticipate weather events of concerns. To achieve improved meteorological modelling of equatorial regions, it is important to collect high resolution earth observation data more frequently. This need motivated the proposal of this PhD study to investigate the critical meteorological measurements of interest and propose innovative small satellite system that could complement existing and future GEO meteorological satellites like Himawari series over Asia.
**Responsibilities**:
- To perform study of equatorial weather models and understand the gaps in the data supply that might be addressed by new generation of small satellite systems. The PhD student is expected to collaborate with weather scientists to identify measurements of interest, and develop new satellite technologies and concepts that could deliver such measurements to significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of equatorial weather predictions.
**Requirements**:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, or Physical Sciences.
- Good knowledge of data analytics, AI & machine learning and weather sciences.
- Keen interest to contribute to improving the equatorial weather forecast.
- Good communication and presentation skills, with appetite for engagement with the industrial supervisor and collaborators.
- Self-starter with good analytical and problem-solving skills.
