DESIGNATION : Manager (MAKER-X), (3-year contract), Office of Research & Tech Transfer

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will have responsibilities under three portfolios within the Office of Research & Tech Transfer (ORTT): (1) Planning & Policy, (2) Research Contracting, and (3) Research Capacity Building, as well as support other ongoing or new initiatives that might occur.

This position will be primarily responsible to execute a series of Multi-disciplinary And Knowledge Exchange Research (MAKER-X) workshops. MAKER-X workshops are platforms that allow SMU faculty from different Schools to interact and share their interests on a common research topic. These workshops may also include external research partners or funders in selected research ideation discussions. These MAKER-X workshops will thus provide opportunities for SMU faculty to network with internal and external stakeholders and bring about greater awareness of SMU research, as well as generate leads for future research funding opportunities.

Planning & Policy
- MAKER-X workshops:

- Support the planning for MAKER-X workshops which include:

- Brainstorming on the workshop agenda with the HOD and the Vice Provost (Research)
- Soliciting inputs from the schools on the proposed research themes
- Setting out the timeline for the execution of the workshops
- Identifying and reaching out to external research partners to be involved in the workshops
- Identifying and reaching out to SMU faculty to be involved in the workshops
- Designing presentation template to facilitate discussions during the workshops
- Logistics planning for the workshops which include:

- Liaising with external and internal stakeholders to schedule the workshops
- Liaising with the external and internal stakeholders on their attendance for the workshops
- Collating the materials from external research partners and SMU faculty for the workshops
- Booking the venue for the workshops and breakout sessions
- Procuring the services of external vendors to provide refreshments for the workshops
- Executing the workshops according to the approved agenda, which include performing any secretariat duties that may be required
- Post-workshop follow-ups which include:

- Liaising with SMU faculty and external parties to track and monitor the progress of any follow-up actions from each workshop
- Planning, setting up and executing any small session discussions as part of the follow-up actions from the workshops
- Providing regular reporting to management on the status of the follow-up actions/key outcomes from each workshop

Research Contracting
- Research Collaboration Agreements (RCAs) resulting from engagements with external research partners:

- Review RCAs together with internal stakeholders to ensure that terms are aligned with the university’s positions for research collaboration agreements and the university’s interests, while escalating non-standard clauses to management for discussion and approval.
- Negotiate RCAs with external research partners together with internal stakeholders.

Research Capacity Building
- Internal Research Grant calls resulting from MAKER-X workshops, including joint grant calls with external research partners:

- Execute the grant call, including consolidating and reviewing the grant call submissions, arranging for the relevant (joint) evaluation meetings, taking notes for the evaluation meetings, notifying the grant results, and so on.
- Monitor and track the progress and outcomes of the awarded projects, including following up with grant awardees on any follow-on obligations resulting from awarding the grant.
- Any other support that may be required from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS
- At least a Bachelor’s Degree in any major.
- 5 or more years of working experience is preferred.
- Prior experience in organizing and facilitating networking meetings will be advantageous.
- Pro-active, independent and resourceful with strong decision-making skills and the ability to work with mínimal supervision.
- Meticulous, attention to detail, and exercise care in delivering quality work
- Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively with and influence internal and external stakeholders.
