Civil Engineer

**Duties**:

- Serves as the Bureau’s Civil Engineer during all phases of major or complicated Bureau projects. Duties include general civil engineering design projects and bridge program work, including inspections, load ratings, and scour evaluations.
- Performs civil engineering functions and project leadership during all phases of project planning, conceptual design, final design (construction contract document preparation) and construction of Bureau facilities.
- Develops master plans, site development studies, site plans, grading plans, layout plans, site drainage plans, construction details, specifications and cost estimates.
- Designs a wide variety of civil engineering projects throughout the Bureau utilizing a variety of materials and analytical methods.
- Works with other design professionals, on laying out planned facilities to make the most advantageous use of site contours, utilities, and access in order to accomplish the desired built environment.
- Prepares final designs, drawings, specifications, analyses, and cost estimates for: dams, bridges, water treatment and distribution systems; sewage treatment and collection systems; site work; roads and trails; and complex recreation facilities.
- Reviews with responsibility for approval, shop drawings and submittals made by construction contractors for technical adequacy and conformance with contract documents.
- Conducts field inspection and surveys for the evaluation of the physical condition of civil infrastructure including bridges, culverts, dams, and roads.
- Assists in the structural evaluation of the BLM National Bridge Inventory (NBI) by periodically the calculating the load ratings for bridges within the inventory. Utilizes established computer programs to model specific structural performance.
- Assists in the evaluation of hydraulic operations of dam spillways, culverts, bridge piers, and bridge abutments. Utilize established computer programs to model and solve specific hydraulic and hydrologic processes.
- Ensures environmental planning considerations are taken when developing facility plans. Assists in pollution control, residuals management, environmental assessments/impact statements, land suitability and carrying capacity analyses.
- Provides a wide variety of professional engineering technical services related to site planning for State, District and field offices throughout the Bureau.
- Participates in final inspections of work with responsibility for final acceptance of the civil and structural portions of the project.
- Operates GPS and topographic surveying instruments for creating elevation and topographic maps of structures. Collect topographic and physical data for developing hydrologic modals of river channels and dam spillways.

Bridges, dams, roads), GPS and topographic survey, field inspection reports.
