Plans, schedules and monitors the movement of materials through the production cycle to determine required materials purchases. Obtains materials using engineering and production schedules to maintain inventory at planned levels (i.e., Just in Time purchases, use of EOQ - Economic Order Quantities). Resolves discrepancies. Creates and maintains bills of material and parts/commodities numbers in supply chain management or other Enterprisewide systems. Ensures material standards are met and non-conformances or variances are approved and/or minimized. Develops specifications for new contract orders. Gathers quotations, examines bids and makes awards. Monitors cost, schedule and scope of assigned subcontracts to assure best quality at best value. Evaluates vendor reliability and develops new supply sources where vendors and suppliers are no longer competitive. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
A buyer is responsible for sourcing and purchasing goods or services on behalf of an organization. They collaborate with other departments to understand their needs, manage inventory levels, and contribute to cost-saving initiatives.
This role involves,
- Sourcing and Purchasing
- Secure quotes, negotiates pricing, terms and conditions, contracts, agreements, and makes recommendations for awarding purchase orders.
- Prepare purchase orders from purchase requisitions to procure parts, components, reagents, chemicals, lab supplies, equipment, instruments, services, etc. on a timely and accurate basis. Ensure requestors are constantly informed on progress of orders.
- Delivery and Inventory Management
- Work with the suppliers and internal customers to ensure on-time delivery and manage purchased inventory levels.
- Supplier Management
- Buyers analyze market trends, evaluate supplier performance, and maintain relationships with vendors. Implement strategic sourcing initiatives to optimize the procurement process. Identify, prioritize, and drive the development of additional suppliers to eliminate sole sourced critical materials.
- Actively manage supplier relationships to ensure effective communication and collaboration, identify win-win solutions and strategies, negotiate purchasing terms, and address supplier issues with material quality or availability.
- Develop supplier agreements and similar arrangements to establish a robust supplier relationship and to guarantee the best pricing.
- Quality and Compliance
- Support Quality Assurance with ISO 13485 audits; ensuring accuracy, clarity, and utility of audit findings.
- Ensure that all procurement and supply chain SOP are up to current practice. Notify QA when new procedures are implemented.
- Review purchase requisitions and supporting documents; and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Continuous Improvement, Kaizen and SBS
- Actively engage in SBS initiatives, using SBS tools (DM, SQDIPE, A3, etc.) to drive continuous improvements in the above roles.
- Work in a cross-functional team environment to achieve the best cost for the products without compromising performance, quality, or reliability.
- Develop creative ideas, strategies, and programs to drive down the cost of direct and indirect materials and services on a continuing basis.
- Drive continuous improvements in the procurement flow, streamline work processes and work cooperatively with others to provide quality internal customer service.
- Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications Include:
- Degree in any engineering discipline
- Minimum 6 years of related experience in purchasing in a technology manufacturing industry.
- Strong negotiation skills and vendor management skills
- Well versed in project management processes and toolsets
- Ability to analyze BOM’s and engineering drawings to understand key requirements
- Strong technical knowledge to effectively perform required job functions
- Ability to read technical specifications and make sourcing decisions/recommendations.
- Must be able to: multi-task, be flexible, work in a close-knit team-oriented atmosphere, and have ability to interact professionally with internal and external customers.
Other skills requirements:
- Attention to detail, negotiation skills, and a good understanding of market dynamics are essential for success in a buyer role.
