Job Overview:
An ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Therapist works with individuals, typically

children, who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental

disorders. Using principles and techniques based on ABA, the therapist

implements individualized treatment plans to help clients develop important skills

and reduce problematic behaviours. The therapist works closely with a clinical

supervisor, behaviour analyst, or other members of the treatment team to ensure

the client’s goals are met effectively.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Implementing Treatment Plans:

- Execute behaviour intervention plans (BIPs) and individualized

treatment plans.
- Implement interventions to increase desirable behaviours, such as

communication, social, and daily living skills.
- Utilize ABA techniques such as reinforcement, prompting, chaining,

and task analysis.

2. Data Collection & Documentation:

- Record and track data on client behaviours, progress, and responses

to interventions.
- Maintain detailed and accurate progress notes for students’ sessions.
- Use data to assist in modifying treatment plans as necessary to ensure

optimal students’ progress.

3. Behaviour Management:

- Identify and address maladaptive behaviours (e.g., aggression, selfinjury,

tantrums).
- Use positive reinforcement and other behaviour management

strategies to reduce challenging behaviours.
- Monitor the students’ progress and ensure the treatment is evolving

as needed.

4. Collaboration & Teamwork:

- Work closely with the supervisor and other professionals to ensure the

students’ needs are met.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss students’ progress,

challenges, and modifications to treatment plans.
- Communicate effectively with families and caregivers to offer

updates and suggest strategies for generalizing skills across settings.

5. Student Interaction:

- Develop rapport with students, establishing a safe, supportive, and

engaging environment.
- Work with students on a one-on-one basis in various settings, such as

homes, schools, or clinics.
- Adapt approaches and techniques to meet the unique needs of

each students.

6. Parent & Caregiver Training:

- Educate and train family members and caregivers on the

implementation of behaviour interventions.
- Provide feedback and guidance to ensure consistency of

treatment across different environments.

7. Professional Development:

- Stay up-to-date with the latest research, techniques, and best

practices in the field of ABA therapy.
- Participate in ongoing training and supervision sessions to ensure

compliance with industry standards.

8. Ethical and Confidential Practice:

- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in all

interactions with students and families.
- Follow all policies and procedures established by the organization, as

well as legal and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:

- Education:

- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
- Experience:

- Experience working with individuals with developmental disorders,

especially autism, is highly preferred.
- Some positions may require certification or training in ABA

techniques, such as Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT)

certification.
- Skills:

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Patient, compassionate, and flexible.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data accurately.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Certification as a Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT) or other ABArelated

credentials.
- Experience in a clinical, school, or home-based ABA therapy setting.
- Knowledge of various ABA techniques and behavioural principles.

Work Environment:
ABA Therapists typically work in various settings, including schools or educational

settings.

Working Hours:
Therapists may work part-time or full-time hours, with flexibility depending on the

students’ needs. Weekend hours may be required.

Compensation:
The salary for an ABA therapist varies depending on experience, and

qualifications. Pay is often hourly, and additional benefits may include health

insuranc, and opportunities for professional development and training.
