**Role**:
The endoscopy technician supports the nursing team in providing safe, quality care to patients and work under supervision of the registered nurse. Endoscopy Technicians supports clinicians, registered nurses and other members of the endoscopy centre team.
They are responsible to provide a safe and clean environment for the Endoscopy patient in the Colorectal Centre.
They prepare patients and setting up the procedure room and equipment for intended scope. They also assist clinicians during simple / diagnostic scope / procedures as required.
**Patient Population**:
Patient undergoing simple screening/diagnostic scope with TOSP 1-3 under moderate sedation and local anaesthesia.
- Gastroscopy
- Sigmoidoscopy/Colonoscopy
- Endoscopic Mucosal Resection
- Rubber band ligation
- Incision and drainage
Procedure without analgesia
- EndoAnal UltraSound (EAUS)
- EndoRectak UltraSound (ERUS)
- Pudendal Nerve Teminal Motor Latency (PNTML)
**Specific Roles and Responsibilities**:
**Pre Procedure**
Provides safe and competent care of patient undergoing Endoscopy procedure
- Prepare patients and setting up the procedure room and equipment / supplies for intended scope.
- Ensure the suction and diathermy machines for cleanliness and good working order
- Perform functional checks on the Endoscopic Camera System and console and ensure is in good working condition
- Maintains and protects integrity of sterile instruments and scopes for use on Endoscopy patient
- Check consent for the correct patient, correct type of procedure / scope.
- Assist safe transfer of patient from trolley/ wheelchair to procedure table under the supervision of the procedure team.
**Intra Procedure**
- Participate in time out lead by registered nurse in procedure room
- Prepare and care for specimens taken to laboratory for analysis / examination
- Maintain sterility and infection control practices and safe environment
- Provide additional supplies, equipment and instruments as needed during scope
- Assist in documentation in procedure room for nursing documentations
**Post Procedure**
- Performed post procedure sending of patient to recovery / inpatient wards and hand over process
- Performed care of sedated patients in recovery room following an endoscopic procedure
- Assist in documentation in recovery room for nursing documentations
- Discharge patient (IV cannula removed, TCU, scope report, MC, discharge summary and advice given)
- Clean and restock procedure and recovery rooms
**Other Duties**
- Decontamination and disinfection of scopes and ultrasound probes
- Housekeeping safe environment and infections control practices
- Inventory, maintain and replenish supplies
- Perform any other duties as assigned by Nursing Officers
**Specific Competencies**:
**Knowledge/Skills/Competencies Needed to Perform Roles and Responsibilities as per Job Description**
- Basic Anatomy and Physiology
- Knowledge of body systems, both anatomically and physiologically, as they relate to endoscopy and surgical procedure
- Knowledge to commonly known medical abbreviations and terminologies
- Knowledge on infection control practices, aseptic techniques and surgical conscience
- Knowledge of basic endoscopy and surgical instrumentation
- Knowledge of different positions used for different endoscopy and surgical procedures
- Knowledge of proper handling of specimens
- Knowledge of performing surgical hand scrub, gowning and gloving
- Knowledge of endoscopy, Pelvic floor investigation and surgical flow
- Knowledge of handling common equipment in endoscopy, procedure and decon room eg ESU, suction machine, AER, HEPA filter cabinet and ultrasound equipment
- Knowledge of checking sterile package integrity and verification of indicators of sterilization
