the job of a ship-broker is to work closely with clients, handling their chartering needs by finding space on ships for their cargoes, and once the space has been found, negociating between the ship-owners and the ship-charterers in order to bring the two together with mutual consent on the contractual terms.

Brokers are expected to meet and visit with clients on a regular basis, to get to know them, to understand their needs, to discuss the market conditions, and to help them in their long term goals. The clients may be in the office next door, or they may be overseas. Attending trade conferences is also part of the remit.
