Roles & Responsibilities

**Context**

Future Cities Lab (FCL) Global is a research community with the mission to shape sustainable future cities and settlement systems. We are 120 people strong and hail from over 35 countries with diverse backgrounds, including architecture, urban design, engineering and environmental, computer, material sciences working in multidisciplinary teams on the common mission.

FCL Global is part of the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) and ETH Zurich and was established in partnership with Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). FCL Global has two hubs, one in Singapore and another Zurich, and strong international partner network spanning academia, government, industry and civil society.

Work closely with another Associate Director, Technology based in Zurich, and helping coordinate programme activities across both hubs.

The Associate Director, Technology is integral to the FCL Global community. Focus on bringing advanced technologies into research activities through demonstration, capacity building and research tool development. Research tools are showcased in our Engagement Platform and are especially important to our work. Existing examples include those designed to assess the energy intensity of buildings, sustainable mobility, urban and rural land-uses around megacities, ecological footprints and urban heat island effects.

The Associate Director, Technology should be familiar with the software development life cycle and methodologies, with experience in project management. Enjoy creative thinking, working with researchers on city-related themes and interacting with stakeholders in government, industry and civil society.
**Duties and Responsibilities**

The scope of work shall comprise of but shall not be limited to:
1. Software Projects
- Evaluate existing digital tool ecology and develop protocols for improving interoperability
- Identify new project requirements in dialogue with leadership team and research groups
- Design project architecture that responds to the needs, is robust, easy to maintain and scale
- Organise work schedules for the development team ensuring projects are completed in time
- Identify risks and draft contingency plans
- Guide, mentor and supervise junior research and development team-members

2. Building Research Capacity
- Support and help develop the Engagement Platform vision
- Operationalise the vision including linking content and technological developments
- Lead technology integration across research activities generally, and specifically in geospatial research (GIS-based tool development) and design thinking (e.g. serious gaming, analytics, user-interfaces and user-experience design)
- Support data management spanning software and policy development
- Initiate and contribute to scientific grant writing related to emerging research themes
- Inform research community on emerging technologies and industry trends, and support innovative teaching and learning initiatives.

3. Leadership & Administration
- Provide leadership on technological matters related to FCL Global in both hubs
- Provide leadership to the technological expertise in the various research modules
- Identify, support and coordinate spin-off opportunities emerging from research activities
- Assist with Engagement Platform budgeting and relevant recruitment
- Liaise with IT department to maintain and improve infrastructure
- Develop workflows and systems to capture, analyse and visualise information on research outputs, KPIs and impacts
- Support external stakeholder liaison (industry, private institutions, public entities, etc.)
**Necessary Requirements**
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field with minimum of 3 years’ managerial experience
- Previous experience working as a software developer
- Previous experience working in a similar role
- Good diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Good communication skills
- Clearly articulate ideas/thoughts

- Scripting and programming languages such as R, python
- Simulation studies and models
