**Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) (PRIMARY) - Job Description**
**Main purpose**
The SENCO, under the direction of the Head of School and Primary Principal, will:
- Help determine the strategic development of Learning Support Needs (LSN) policy and provision in the school
- Be responsible for day-to-day operation of the LS policy and co-ordination of specific provision to support individual pupils with LSN.
- Ensure that the staged approach to meeting LSN that the school has implemented is adhered to across the school in order to facilitate the correct and timely input required for individual children
- Provide professional guidance to colleagues, working closely with staff, parents and other agencies
- The SENCO will also be expected to fulfil the professional responsibilities of a teacher, as set out in other school documentation._
**Duties and responsibilities**
**Strategic development of LS policy and provision**
- Have a strategic overview of provision for pupils with LSN or across the school, monitoring and reviewing the quality of provision
- Contribute to school self-evaluation, particularly with respect to provision for pupils with LS
- Ensure the LS policy is put into practice, and that the objectives of this policy are reflected in the school improvement plan
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of national and international initiatives which may affect the school’s policy and practice
- Evaluate and report to the Principal whether operation of the LS policy and support staff is providing significant levels of impact on the outcomes of children identified
- Manage the co-ordination of provision
- Maintain an accurate LS register of children and provision in process
- Provide guidance to colleagues on teaching pupils with LSN, and advise on the graduated approach to Learning support
- Be aware of the level of provision required for children at all levels and stages of the LS policy
- Work with external agencies and where appropriate other schools to ascertain the levels of need of children on entry. Where necessary, provide screening testing on entry too
- Be a key point of contact for external agencies, in order to both liaise with and signpost as needed to all relevant stakeholders
- Analyse assessment data for pupils with LSN to evaluate impact and effectiveness of interventions
- Implement in-class interventions and where required groups for pupils with LS and evaluate their effectiveness
**Support for pupils with LS**
- Identify a pupil’s LS need
- Co-ordinate provision that meets the pupil’s needs, and monitor its effectiveness
- Provide relevant expertise in support of class teachers to enable them to work with
pupils in class AND where necessary working with those children in their classes
- Secure relevant services and resources for the pupil where it is deemed necessary
- Ensure records are maintained and kept up to date from the beginning to the end of the interventions, including all correspondence with parents, outside agencies, teachers, etc.
- Set short term targets that enable teacher, SENCO and parents and child to ascertain the effectiveness of specified interventions
- Review the effectiveness of the IEP with teachers, parents or carers and the pupil on a regular basis
- Communicate regularly with parents or carers about the progress made by the child receiving LS
- Ensure that if the pupil transfers to another school, all relevant information is conveyed to it, and support a smooth transition for the pupil, whenever requested, respecting in the process the confidentiality requirements of the PDPA in Singapore.
- Promote the pupil’s inclusion in the school community and access to the curriculum, facilities and extra-curricular activities, to the fullest extent possible given the pupil’s circumstances and the school’s resources
- When the appropriate stage is reached; assessing and screening the needs of the students for their emotional, behavioral or academic difficulties to ascertain the exact nature of the difficulty and how to approach it both internally and if necessary, externally
**Leadership and management**
- Work with the Leadership of the school to ensure the school meets its responsibilities in terms of reasonable adjustments and access arrangements to accommodate every child’s needs
- Prepare and review information the school is required to provide the NPS group
- Contribute to the school improvement plan and whole-school policy
- Identify training needs for staff and how to meet these needs
- Lead INSET/CPD for staff, where it is deemed appropriate
- Share procedural information, such as the school’s LS policy
- Promote an ethos and culture that supports the school’s LS policy and promotes good outcomes for pupils with LS or a disability
