Job Overview:
An Occupational Therapist (OT) is a healthcare professional who works with
students to help them develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for daily
living and working. The OT evaluates physical, emotional, and cognitive abilities
to create personalized treatment plans aimed at improving patients' ability to
perform activities of daily life (ADLs), such as self-care, mobility, and work-related
tasks. The OT may work with students of all ages across all centres
Key Responsibilities:
1. Student Evaluation and Assessment:
- Conduct thorough assessments to determine the physical, cognitive,
emotional, and environmental factors affecting the students’ ability
to perform daily tasks.
- Review medical histories, diagnostic reports, and treatment plans to
identify students’ needs and set therapy goals.
- Administer standard and specialized tests to assess motor skills,
sensory processing, strength, endurance, coordination, and fine and
gross motor abilities.
2. Treatment Planning and Implementation:
- Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans based on
assessment results and students’ needs.
- Design therapeutic interventions aimed at improving functional
abilities, including activities related to personal care, mobility, work,
and leisure activities.
- Use therapeutic exercises, assistive technology, adaptive
equipment, and environmental modifications to facilitate recovery
and enhance independence.
3. Therapeutic Interventions:
- Implement a variety of treatment methods such as motor
coordination exercises, sensory integration techniques, cognitive
strategies, and ergonomic assessments.
- Teach students techniques to manage daily routines, self-care tasks,
and work activities.
- Provide training in the use of assistive devices (e.g., wheelchairs,
prosthetics, adaptive utensils) to help student achieve
independence.
4. Patient Education and Training:
- Educate students and caregivers on strategies to improve daily living
skills and promote safety at home, at work, and in the community.
- Provide guidance on proper body mechanics, posture, and
ergonomics to prevent further injury or complications.
- Offer education regarding health conditions and their impact on
daily functioning, as well as strategies for self-management.
5. Collaboration with Other Healthcare Providers:
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians,
physical therapists, speech therapists, social workers, and nurses, to
ensure a holistic approach to student care.
- Participate in case conferences and provide input on the students’
progress and ongoing therapy needs.
6. Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date students’ records, including
treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
- Complete required administrative paperwork and documentation in
compliance with healthcare facility policies and legal regulations.
- Track and report students’ progress toward therapeutic goals,
making adjustments to treatment plans as needed.
7. Continuing Education and Professional Development:
- Stay current with advances in occupational therapy practices,
treatment techniques, and emerging technologies through
professional development activities.
- Participate in workshops, conferences, and continuing education
opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Relevant Certification in Occupational Therapy from an accredited
program is required.
- Licensure as an Occupational Therapist (OT) in the state of practice
is required.
- Experience:
- Prior experience in a clinical, hospital, rehabilitation, or school setting
is preferred.
- Experience working with specific patient populations (e.g., pediatric,
geriatric, neurological, orthopedic) is beneficial.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Strong understanding of human anatomy, movement, and
functional performance.
- Ability to develop personalized treatment plans and modify them
based on student progress.
- Proficiency in using various therapeutic equipment and techniques.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with students, families,
and healthcare teams.
- Compassionate, patient, and adaptable in providing care to
individuals with varying needs.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential patient information with
professionalism and integrity
Working Conditions:
- The Occupational Therapist may be required to work in various centres.
- Work hours may vary, with the possibility of evenings or weekends
depending on the facility and students’ needs.

with mobility, standing for extended periods, and performing therapeutic
exercises.
