Senior/Lead Research Engineer – Quantum infrared sensing (SRTT-Q.InC)The infrared (IR) spectrum contains much information beyond what we can see with our eyes. With precise infrared measurements we can see through biological tissue samples, discern the composition of chemical samples, and even uncover the original sketches underneath great works of art. However, the low energies of infrared photons make detectors vulnerable to thermal noise. IR imaging thus lags far behind the technology for visible light, and precision measurements can require bulky and expensive cryogenic cooling. We can circumvent this using a quantum optics technique called Imaging with Undetected Photons (1). Using nonlinear optical processes we create pairs of correlated photons, one IR and one visible. The IR photon is passed through a sample, and using quantum interference the information is passed to the visible photon. Thus we can use conventional visible-light photodetectors to take IR measurements. This could be used to build portable quantum IR sensors which are more sensitive than is possible classically, while being more compact and requiring less power. This position will work on an experiment in Imaging with Undetected Photons. You will help build this system, and optimise it for use on a variety of biological and chemical samples. You will work in a supportive group with a diverse range of interests, who are passionate about new technology and fundamental science. Requirements Bachelors or Masters degree in Physics, Optics, Engineering, or related fields. Experience (not mandatory) in areas such as: Experimental optics, particularly nonlinear optics; Programming in Python, Mathematica, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or COMSOL; Optomechanics, electromagnetic levitation; Modelling and simulation. The Quantum Sensing and Metrology pillar works at the interface of optics, quantum sensing, and fundamental physics.
