Job Title: Senior Laboratory Specialist
The laboratory specialist will be responsible for a variety of tests and examinations.
- Examine clinical specimens, perform laboratory testing and report results within the stipulated time frame (TAT) in line with laboratory policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Perform PCR, hybridisation, library preparation, next-generation sequencing and advanced genetic laboratory applications.
- Determine interference or inhibition problems that may arise during extraction, amplification or sequencing of nucleic acids.
- Verify performance of clinical assays through quality control, validation and other activities.
- Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, notifying the supervisor when instruments malfunction.
- Work closely with supervisors to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to quality assurance according to established policies and procedures.
- Manage inventory of supplies and reagents, communicating order needs.
- Operate computer programs related to equipment and laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Maintain records of test results and archives of data.
- Ensure good clinical practice and a safe working environment in line with laboratory safety, staff safety and patient safety regulations.
- Carry out laboratory procedures, examinations and tests as per established laboratory policies and procedures.
- Develop and demonstrate technical competence.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Education: Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification; or a basic degree in a relevant science subject.Experience: Preferably 2-3 years of clinical laboratory experience in molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, or cytogenetics. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
