Lead Engineer in Power & Energy Systems (Vehicular Platforms)Senior Army Engineer (Power & Energy Systems), you will serve as a commissioned officer and specialist engineer within MES, anchoring the power and energy engineering domain for all Army vehicular platforms. From tracked systems like MBTs and AFVs to wheeled combat vehicles and specialised support fleets, you will ensure their propulsion, power‐generation, distribution, and sustainability systems are optimised, resilient, and future‐ready. Your remit spans lifecycle engineering, hybrid/electric powertrains, energy storage systems, and sustainment engineering to maintain operational availability and reduce logistical burdens. The Defence industry is rapidly transitioning toward electrification, hybrid drives, and high‐power energy systems to support advanced sensors, directed energy weapons, and unmanned systems. You will lead MES in adopting these technologies and embedding them into the Army's fleet while commanding teams of engineers and soldiers who sustain these critical systems. Responsibilities Power & Energy Systems Engineering & Integration Lead the design, engineering, and integration of propulsion, power generation, energy storage, and power distribution subsystems across tracked and wheeled vehicles. Drive adoption of hybrid/electric architectures, modular battery systems, and auxiliary power units (APUs) to enhance energy efficiency and operational stealth. Manage the lifecycle of power and energy subsystems: qualification, mission‐profile modelling, reliability (MTBF), obsolescence, mid‐life upgrades, and residual life assessment. Oversee system assurance for power systems exposed to harsh environments (shock, vibration, EMI/EMC, heat) and ensure compliance with military standards. Innovation, Sustainability & Logistics Optimisation Lead initiatives for battlefield electrification including hybrid‐electric drive systems, energy storage integration, and renewable energy (solar/hydrogen) solutions. Evaluate technologies such as vehicle‐to‐grid (V2G) systems, fast‐charging batteries, and modular battery swap designs to improve sustainability and logistic agility. Collaborate with DTC, DSTA, DSO, and industry partners to develop prototypes, conduct testing, and operationalise new power and energy solutions. Develop sustainment models that reduce fuel dependency, enhance thermal efficiency, and improve operational readiness in dispersed environments. Command and lead multidisciplinary teams of engineers and soldiers specialising in vehicle power and energy systems. Plan and execute field operations, maintenance detachments, and forward sustainment missions focusing on power and energy domains. Mentor and develop engineers under the Army Engineer Professional Pathway (AEPP) towards professional accreditation and advanced studies. Establish safety certification standards, high‐voltage system protocols, and technical governance frameworks for power and energy operations. Operational Readiness & Assurance Provide technical leadership during exercises, deployments, and contingencies involving vehicle power systems, ensuring high readiness and reliability. Conduct FMEA, root‐cause analysis, and system reliability investigations to drive corrective engineering improvements. Monitor and assess global trends in military vehicle electrification, hybrid propulsion, and advanced power architectures to maintain technological superiority. Qualifications Recognised degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Power Systems, or related Engineering disciplines. 5–10+ years of experience in power and energy engineering, hybrid/electric propulsion, battery systems, or sustainment engineering. Systems‐engineering mindset with full lifecycle experience from concept to sustainment. Proven leadership ability to lead technical teams, manage projects, and command engineering detachments. Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Required Skills Experience in defence or automotive electrification industries. Familiarity with hybrid vehicle systems, battery integration, and energy‐efficient technologies. Professional accreditation (e.g., Chartered Engineer) or postgraduate qualifications in energy or propulsion systems.
