Data Center Technician, Data Center Operations — Google

Google's Hardware Operations team monitors the physical infrastructure behind Google's services. As an Operations Technician, you'll install, configure, test, troubleshoot and maintain hardware (servers and components) and server software (Linux clusters). You may coordinate with teams on more complex components such as networks, routers, hubs, switches and networking protocols. A typical day involves manual movement and installation of racks; the role can be physically demanding and may require non-standard hours.

Responsibilities

• Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across teams.
• Report issues and follow data center procedures to troubleshoot and diagnose complex equipment or infrastructure issues, applying resources to resolve identified problems.
• Maintain the security and integrity of data, including data handling and erasure checks in accordance with Google security standards.
• Disassemble specific equipment that has reached end-of-life through part replacement or maintenance within one or more teams.
• Repair, fix, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, or infrastructure based on identified issues with multiple solutions.

Minimum qualifications

• Experience with assembly of mechanical or electrical systems, or performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment.
• Experience with diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer hardware and server hardware.
• Experience with networking protocols.
• Ability to lift/move 50 lb (23 kg) of equipment and sustain physical activity over extended periods, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling and lifting.
• Ability to work non-standard hours, including weekends, night shifts, holidays and shift-based schedules as required.

Preferred qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 4 years of experience in maintenance and monitoring of server systems.
• Experience with performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on IT equipment or in similar roles (e.g., Systems Administration, Network Deployment Engineer, Help Desk Technician).
• Experience working in a data center or network operations center environment.
• Project management and leadership experience, and collaboration with teams.
• Experience with Linux operating systems.
