Job purpose
The Marine Standards Supervisor is responsible for developing the company's Safety Management System (SMS) and its continuous improvement, ensuring that the company's SMS, Quality, Health, Safety, Security, Environmental (QHSSE) policies are in accordance with all relevant international rules and regulations. The role is responsible for standardizing and harmonizing reporting and processes, identifying risks, and proposing safety action plans with relevant departments and teams.
The role also involves preparing periodic QHSSE reports, working with safety alerts, and company directive circulars for publication.
This position plays a pivotal role in coordinating closely with the Marine department, Technical department, Superintendents, and operations team to maintain safety standards and promote continuous improvement.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and harmonize the company's Safety Management System (SMS) and QHSSE policies.
- Propose continuous performance improvement plans, regularly reviewed for safety, risk identification, and prevention.
- Maintain and improve the global SMS, including structure, organization, directives, associated documents, ISPS documentation, and dedicated software.
- Work closely with Marine Safety Investigators to analyze incidents, propose, record, and follow up on corrective actions and recommendations.
- Organize the annual management review.
- Monitor compliance with Quality, Health, Security, Safety, and Environmental regulations, working with DPA and CSO to propose action plans.
- Lead various committees to improve SMS and act as the business product owner for QHSSE software modules.
- Identify training needs and encourage team development in knowledge, skills, and training.
- Ensure training for shore and ship staff on QHSSE software modules, ISM, and marine regulations.
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Contribute to promoting safety culture and digitalization processes.
- Develop KPIs and prepare reports for other departments, customers, and third parties.
- Assist management in QHSSE matters, monitoring performance, alerts, and deviations.
Qualifications & Experience requirements
- 8–10 years of maritime experience, with 2–3 years in a managerial or supervisory role. Sailing experience is welcomed, especially Master Mariner or Class 1/2 Marine Engineer.
- ISM and ISO internal auditor certificates, solid understanding of ISM code, MLC & ISPS, IMO conventions, ship management, and safety management systems.
- Hands-on experience with ship management software, especially QHSSE and PMS modules.
- Experience in report and newsletter preparation.
- Exposure to root cause analysis, incident investigation, and process management.
- Familiarity with ISO standards 9001, 14001, and 45001 is preferred.
