Rio Tinto Marine provides safe, efficient, and cost‐effective shipping services to the Rio Tinto Group. The team specialises in safety, vetting, assurance, environment and climate change, operations and chartering, and is the primary centre of marine supply‐chain expertise within the Group. Responsibilities Maintain critical lines of defence for Health, Safety, Environmental, Welfare and Human Rights risks on board the Rio Tinto fleet of owned and chartered vessels. Vet vessels that perform over 2,800 voyages annually, ensuring high‐quality standards across the portfolio. Oversee vessel and shipowner reviews, audits and inspections with internal assurance teams and third‐party surveyors; track and resolve improvement actions. Manage incidents on vessels carrying Rio Tinto products, coordinating incident response plans, investigations, reporting and learning. Lead Rio Tinto's initiatives to improve safety and welfare in bulk shipping by collaborating with industry peers, ship owners, managers and other stakeholders. Implement advanced digital tools to identify risks and prevent incidents using Rio Tinto Marine's comprehensive data sets. Develop and implement Rio Tinto‐specific training programmes to improve Health, Safety, Environmental, Welfare and Human Rights aspects onboard the fleets and within the team. What you will need for the role To succeed in this role, you will have: Relevant degree qualifications. Operations experience in the marine sector. Experience leading diverse teams, strong leadership, influencing and coaching skills. Understanding of marine risk management, classification and overall risk‐management techniques. Ability to drive programmes of change and deliver challenging targets and outcomes. Excellent technical writing and skills using digital and data‐analytics tools. Ability to learn and share learnings within the organisation and with third parties. Maritime industry networks and contacts, with the ability to develop positive engagements and collaborate with vessel owners, technical management companies, vetting and assurance and training providers, NGOs and regulators. It will also be beneficial if you have: Occupational Safety and Health degree. Master Class Certificate of Competency and/or Chief Engineer Certification. Experience sailing on bulk ore carriers or tankers. Risk auditing and incident investigation experience. What we offer A work environment where safety is the number one priority.
