Job Title: Perioperative Technician

About the Role

The perioperative technician plays a vital support role in the operating and endoscopy room, working alongside surgeons, anesthetists, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective patient care.

Primary Responsibilities (80%)
  • Preparation of patients and the operating room, including setting up equipment and supplies as required.
  • Maintenance of a safe environment through proper use of equipment and adherence to infection control practices.
  • Verification of patient consent and procedure details.
  • Transportation of pre-operative patients to the operating room.
  • Assistance with patient transfer and positioning.
  • Documentation of patient care records.
  • Establishment and maintenance of a sterile field.
  • Participation in surgical timeouts.
  • Anticipation of surgeons' needs by passing instruments and supplies.
  • Collection, labeling, and handling of specimens.
  • Maintenance of sterile instruments and scopes for patient use.
  • Application of dressings and securing of drains.
  • Cleaning of surgical instruments and disinfection of trolleys post-surgery.
  • Safe transfer of patients to the recovery area and handover.
  • Cleaning and restocking of the operating room.
Secondary Responsibilities (20%)
  • Regular attendance at in-service education programs to stay updated on knowledge and skills.
  • Participation in continuing development activities to maintain competency in areas of practice.
  • Contribution to the review and development of clinical standards and guidelines.
  • Precepting, mentoring, and orientating students and newly joined technicians.
  • Acknowledgment of additional responsibilities assigned by RNs or Nurse Managers/Clinicians.
