Job Overview

Vascular technologists are specialized healthcare professionals who perform non-invasive studies using ultrasound and blood pressure measurements to assess for vascular diseases or disorders.

They work with a high level of independence, compiling information gathered from vascular examinations to give preliminary impressions for physicians. Vascular technologists require training in vascular scanning techniques, physiological testing, and in-depth knowledge of vascular disease.

To become competent, a minimum of two years' training is required. A professional certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) is necessary upon completion of training.

The job involves working in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment, performing various vascular studies that can take between 30 minutes to several hours depending on the number of scans ordered.

  • Peripheral Arterial Disease Evaluation
  • Perform finger/ankle/toe-brachial pressure index studies.
  • Conduct arterial studies for lower and upper extremities to evaluate peripheral arterial disease.
  • Assess carotid arteries for blockages.
  • Screen and surveil abdominal aorta, iliac, and visceral arteries for disorders such as aneurysms, dissections, and blockages.
  • Pre-operatively scan arterio-venous fistula creation for dialysis to determine patency and lumen diameters.
  • Surveil arterio-venous fistula or graft when difficulties arise during dialysis.
  • Perform venous studies of upper and lower limbs for deep vein thrombosis.
  • Examine varicose veins/venous reflux for chronic venous insufficiency.
  • Conduct pre-cardiac or vascular surgery screening to determine lumen diameters of conduits.
  • Specialize in vascular studies for compression syndrome, such as thoracic outlet syndrome.
  • Measure transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TCPO2) to detect viable tissue in extremities.
