Job Overview

The Senior Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and releasing cloud-based infrastructure solutions. This role involves managing transformational journeys towards the use of cloud-based technology and collaborating with the business throughout the request-delivery-support life-cycle. The Senior Cloud Engineer serves as the technical interface and solution delivery owner, overseeing scripting for automation and software deployment, and recommending improvements to increase performance and scalability. Additionally, they analyze cloud service usage to identify opportunities for optimizing the cost of cloud services.

Key Responsibilities

Cloud Strategy Implementation

  • Contribute to the development of IT infrastructure strategy
  • Advise senior leaders on cloud-related activities and projects
  • Design the cloud infrastructure framework
  • Support business functions in their transformation to cloud-based technology
  • Promote the adoption of cloud-based services across the organization

Business Requirements Definition

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs and technical requirements
  • Envision the evolution of the infrastructure to provide a highly scalable and performant solution
  • Negotiate expectations
  • Anticipate internal and/or external business challenges and/or regulatory issues

Cloud Solution Development

  • Develop detailed technical architecture blueprints and design for complex projects
  • Design a consistent connectivity model to facilitate quick, simple, secure consumption of cloud services
  • Oversee the development of automation and orchestration of software and scripting
  • Integrate solutions with all underlying public and private cloud technologies
  • Provide technical leadership to the team on technical approaches, architectural designs, and code reviews
  • Ensure the maintenance of security standards according to internal policies

Cloud Solution Implementation

  • Develop implementation strategies
  • Oversee the development and execution of testing of cloud solutions
  • Advise on issue resolution

Cloud Solution Optimization

  • Present new methodologies/solutions to key stakeholders to enhance and improve cloud infrastructure performance, scalability, and security
  • Drive continuous improvements of cloud administration and operational processes and standards
  • Analyze cloud service usage to identify opportunities for optimizing the cost of cloud services
  • Manage automation of all repeatable activities
  • Provide direction and escalation path for problem resolution, upgrades, and patches

Team Management

  • Oversee team management, including budgets, forecasting, work allocations, and staffing
  • Develop staff through ongoing coaching, mentoring, and career discussions
  • Define common goals, direction, and accountability among staff
  • Drive effective performance management practices within the department in accordance with company policies and procedures

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science/Information Technology or relevant discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of IT experience in various disciplines, including Linux, WinTel, network, firewalls, databases, firewalls, load balancers, backup, and storage
  • Minimum 5 years' hands-on experience designing and building enterprise-scale cloud infrastructure on Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure
  • Certified Amazon Web Services Solutions Architect or Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification, TOGAF
  • Knowledge of DevOps tool chains and experience with cloud technologies and tools such as Containers, Ansible, Terraform, Chef, Puppet, and languages such as YAML, JSON, or Python
  • Strong understanding of cloud security and experience designing and implementing defense strategies on commercial cloud
  • Excellent verbal and spoken English skills with the ability to influence others to move towards consensus
  • Strong initiative, good team player, enjoys taking ownership of issues, process-driven, and great attention to details
