Avian Species Manager

This role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Avian Breeding and Research Centre, ensuring the successful breeding of bird species, and building the capacity of a young team.
Main Responsibilities- Breed birds following collection plan priorities, guest experience needs in walkthrough aviaries, and ark or insurance population needs for threatened species.
- Ensure health, welfare, and proper care of birds by reviewing animal care protocols, monitoring animal behaviour and health, and coordinating veterinary care.
- Manage facilities, including animal habitats and aviaries, to ensure they are well-maintained and comply with standards.
- Develop the capacity of a young team by supervising, mentoring, and training staff. Be team-focused and effectively manage workflow.
- Conduct, assist, or supervise scientific research for the Breeding and Research Centre.
- Bachelor's degree in zoology or related life science discipline.
- Substantial experience working as an aviculturist in a zoological or conservation-breeding facility.
- Experience with environmental and behavioural requirements of birds.
- Good understanding of the five domains of animal welfare.
- Experience in bird reproduction requirements, mating opportunities, and health checks on all bird species within the department.
- Ability to demonstrate good leadership qualities and experience in staff training and capacity building would be advantageous.
- Competency in using computers and basic software packages, including ZIMS software, would be beneficial.
