A trade mark can be any distinctive sign that identifies a product or service, such as a name, logo, or slogan. It is an important tool for businesses to differentiate themselves from their competitors and build brand recognition.
As a trade mark examiner, you will work with other colleagues in the Registry of Trade Marks to review trade mark applications and ensure they meet the legal requirements for registration. This includes examining the application to determine if the trade mark is unique and does not infringe on existing trademarks. You may also be involved in the formulation and implementation of national policies related to the registration of trade marks, contributing to Singapore's status as a global hub for intellectual assets and intellectual property.
The key responsibilities of a trade mark examiner include:
- Examining trade mark applications to ensure they meet legal requirements
- Conducting searches for conflicting trade marks
- Reviewing descriptions of goods/services against international standards
Apart from examination, trade mark examiners will also take on administrative roles and responsibilities necessary for the proper functioning of the Registry of Trade Marks and to meet larger organisational goals. As you develop in seniority and deepen your expertise, your professional role will expand to include supervision, mentoring and coaching responsibilities.
We seek individuals with a university degree (from any background) and excellent written and verbal communication skills. You should demonstrate sound research, analytical, comprehension and decision-making skills, and be detailed and customer-oriented. Having some understanding of how businesses brand, market and identify themselves is also desirable. Additionally, you should be able to manage multiple projects concurrently and be self-motivated, driven to excel and enthusiastic about embracing new challenges and opportunities. Finally, you must be committed to professional and personal self-development.
