Position Overview

As a Resident Physician in the Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery (HRM) service at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), you will engage in comprehensive patient management within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Our department is staffed by 16 dedicated consultants who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of a wide array of musculoskeletal disorders. We emphasize a collaborative approach to orthopaedic care, working alongside Sports Medicine physicians, physiotherapists, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Actively participate in patient care across clinic, operating room, and hospital wards, functioning at the level of a junior surgeon.
  • Under the guidance of a consultant Hand Surgeon, manage an outpatient specialist hand clinic, addressing both new and follow-up cases.
  • Oversee a local hand surgery theatre list and assist orthopaedic residents with hand-related cases.
  • Support the Consultant during general anaesthesia hand procedures.
  • Engage in thrice-weekly didactic lectures and departmental meetings, along with regular national hand surgery educational sessions.
  • Demonstrate progressive improvement in surgical skills throughout the training year, with opportunities for additional practice in our microsurgery laboratory.
  • Participate in teaching activities for undergraduates and interns as directed by the Consultants.
  • Conduct at least one research project annually related to the training program.

Clinical Duties
  • Participate in a minimum of three operating lists weekly.
  • Allocate one half-day session for academic and research pursuits.
  • Be rostered for night and on-call duties in conjunction with the Orthopaedic on-call team.
  • Conduct clinic and preoperative assessments as part of routine responsibilities.
  • Maintain and regularly update a logbook to track clinical experiences and activities.

Research Opportunities
  • Engage in research activities, including publications and presentations at scientific meetings, audits, and the initiation of new projects.
  • All candidates are expected to present at least one research or audit project at a national or international meeting each year.

Academic Engagement
  • Participate in the department's teaching program and national hand surgery educational sessions.
  • Present literature reviews, case studies, and discussions during departmental meetings.
  • Contribute to the education of junior residents and produce one educational resource on hand surgery for the department portal.

In this role, you will be entrusted with the comprehensive management of patients under the supervision of senior medical professionals, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient care in orthopaedic medicine.

Qualifications
  • Possess a recognized qualification from a medical institution listed by the Singapore Medical Council.
  • Registered as a medical doctor in the country of qualification and last practice.
  • Have a minimum of three years of experience as a Resident Physician (or equivalent) in the relevant field.
  • Maintain active clinical practice for the past three years.
  • Provide evidence of English proficiency if the basic medical qualification was not conducted in English.
  • Obtain medical registration from the Singapore Medical Council.
