Conservation Specialist for Sea Turtle Protection
2 weeks ago
The project is a community-based sea turtle conservation program located in the Caribbean province of Limn, Costa Rica. The program works together with the local community to protect critically endangered leatherback turtles.
Volunteers will participate in daily and nightly beach patrols, operate a hatchery, and assist in data collection about nesting dynamics and egg relocation. This opportunity provides hands-on experience in conservation efforts, including research, plastic contamination solutions, and community projects.
The project is ideal for students studying environmental science, marine biology, zoology, ecology, or conservation. Volunteers will gain valuable skills and knowledge while contributing to the conservation of sea turtles.
The data collected from nesting females will improve our understanding of their behavior and help coordinate conservation efforts worldwide.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Interest in environmental science, marine biology, zoology, ecology, or conservation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
Benefits:
- Hands-on experience in conservation efforts
- Opportunity to contribute to the conservation of sea turtles
- Valuable skills and knowledge gained
Others:
The project strives to increase alternative livelihoods for coastal communities, taking the need for poaching and hunting turtles away. The main threats to sea turtles on this public beach are caused by humans: egg poaching and hunting nesting turtles contribute to a population decline of all species.
Through the involvement of local inhabitants, the project provides not only a unique opportunity for volunteers to experience a community-based conservation project but also offers a legal and sustainable revenue for community members.
