Job Title: Science Laboratory Coordinator


About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Science Laboratory Coordinator. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating laboratory experiments, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe working environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate preparation of resources for practical lessons, adhering to health & safety standards and class requirements, including liaising with teaching staff and support staff.

  2. Prepare solutions, materials, cultures for living organisms.

  3. Assemble apparatus.

  4. Obtain materials by local purchase.

  5. Trial practical activities as required.

  6. Construct and modify apparatus as needed.

  7. Carry out risk assessments for technician activities.

  8. Assist in practical classes and carry out demonstrations.

  9. Use initiative to identify areas requiring assistance, without direction, and communicate with staff.

  10. Maintain records of departmental expenditure.

  11. Monitor and control financial records according to school policy.

  12. Evaluate the availability of suitable materials and suggest alternatives for suitability and economy.

  13. Deliver equipment, materials, and organisms to rooms.

  14. Collect, clean, and return resources to stores in a timely manner.

  15. Maintain resources, including routine repairs.

  16. Care for plants/animals.

  17. Check stock and keep accurate stock records.

  18. Order supplies in a timely manner.

  19. Ensure maintenance of a healthy & safe working environment through active contribution to assessment, monitoring, and review of health & safety procedures and information resources.

  20. Keep up-to-date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development.

  21. Provide technical advice and support on health & safety issues to teaching and trainee technical staff.

  22. Safely treat and dispose of used materials, including hazardous substances, and respond to actual or potential hazards.

  23. Safely handle and store hazardous substances.

  24. Maintain healthy and safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials.

  25. Organize and store resources effectively.

  26. Perform general cleaning of laboratory bench surfaces and fixed equipment weekly.

  27. Clean laboratory sinks monthly.

  28. Clean used equipment daily.

  29. Dispose of waste materials and expired chemicals as necessary.

  30. Stay informed about health & safety requirements and developments in practical science.

  31. Organize, store, and check the condition of chemicals and equipment regularly.

  32. Anually review the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of the laboratory and all health and safety procedures with the Head of Facility.

  33. Oversight and obtain registration and renewal of licenses on hazardous substances with relevant government authorities.
