About Job

Descartes Underwriting is seeking a skilled R&D Data Scientist to join its Research and Development Department. In this role, you will be responsible for contributing to the improvement of existing models to enhance and strengthen our understanding of climate risks and machine learning methods.

  • Collaborate with underwriting, business, and innovation teams to provide technical advice and ensure products are efficiently integrated into the underwriting process and meet client needs.
  • Identify new and innovative ideas and test state-of-the-art methods based on recent research articles.
  • Propose model developments or features that are technically and economically aligned with the company's strategy.

You will work closely with the team to present minor changes of models to underwriters and work towards their validation. You will also suggest improvements in software or infrastructure challenges.

Requirements
  • A scientific academic background with a Master's degree or PhD in meteorological studies, climate science, physics, hydrology, or applied mathematics.
  • Strong skills in statistics, applied mathematics, physics, and machine learning methods.
  • Proven track record of significant individual contributor roles for solving complex problems.
