Music Therapist Role Summary

The Music Therapist will administer music therapy as part of a comprehensive therapeutic treatment plan in groups or on an individual basis to address physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs as presented by patients and their families.

  • Clinical Assessment & Intervention

Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of patients' emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs. Develop individualized treatment plans based on therapeutic goals, patient preferences, and abilities. Facilitate individual and group music therapy sessions to promote emotional well-being, meaningful engagement, and enhanced quality of life. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and adjust approaches as needed.

  • Documentation & Ethical Practice

Maintain accurate, confidential records of assessments, treatment plans, session notes, and patient progress. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to provide updates on patient and family engagement. Refer patients to other professionals (e.g. social workers, psychologists) for complex needs such as severe depression, suicide risk, or complicated grief.

  • Program Development & Research

Support the development of programs to address service gaps and enhance care delivery. Contribute to research projects to advance evidence-based music therapy in palliative care. Promote awareness of music therapy through presentations, public engagement, and stakeholder outreach.

  • Professional Development & Collaboration

Maintain professional competence through supervision, continuing education, and self-care. Attend departmental meetings and provide updates on activities and projects. Collaborate with inter-professional teams to design and evaluate holistic interventions for patients and families.

  • Administrative & Special Projects

Assist in organizing departmental initiatives and events. Prepare reports on therapy outcomes and contribute to internal and external publications. Undertake tasks and projects as assigned by management.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree in Music Therapy
  • 2 years of relevant experience in a healthcare environment
  • Good communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Possess empathy, creativity and works well in team(s)
  • Proficient in playing a variety of musical instruments and understands music theory
  • Skilled in improvisation, composition and arrangement across music genres
