- Conduct intakeof information from patients, construct a complete pedigree, obtainappropriate medical histories, organize and present the pertinentmedical and genetic information to the health care team.
- Apply his/her knowledge of genetics and genetic disordersto effectively convey genetic, medical and technical information tothe patient.
- Identify family dynamics andemotional responses from the patient.
- Helppatients understand the medical aspects of the genetic condition,as well as the psychological and familial implications ofgenetics.
- Provide patients with information onoptions that are available such as genetic testing, diseasemanagement and prevention, and facilitate the patient'sdecision-making in a non-directive manner.
- Provide patients with resources for support andopportunities in research programs existing in the medicalcommunity.
- Coordinate genetic testing forpatients and families, including liaising with the respectivegenetic laboratories, arranging the testing, following up onresults and discussion of results withpatients.
- Master'sDegree in Genetic Counselling or equivalent
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in counselling
- Proficiency with the use ofIT
