About the Role

Are you fascinated by how ecosystems respond to climate change? Do you want to unravel how seawater intrusion is reshaping carbon cycling in Southeast Asia's coastal peatlands? Do you like fieldwork?

We are looking for a passionate and driven Research Fellow to take a leading role in our study of biogeochemical processes in tropical peatlands, focusing on oil palm plantations impacted by saltwater intrusion in Sarawak (Malaysia) and Kalimantan (Indonesia).

This research will be conducted in close collaboration with Swinburne University in Kuching and Tanjungpura University in Pontianak, Kalimantan. Your work will directly inform conservation and climate mitigation strategies, making a real-world impact on carbon management in these vulnerable landscapes.

Duration: Full-time (renewable up to 30 months)

Location: National University of Singapore (NUS), Department of Geography

Key Responsibilities


• Conduct field measurements of carbon emissions (CO₂ and CH₄) along a seawater intrusion gradient in oil palm plantations.


• Analyze peat and water chemistry, including dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen cycling, and salinity effects.


• Work closely with local research partners to set up and maintain long-term monitoring sites.


• Use advanced analytical techniques (e.g., isotope analysis, trace gas measurements) to assess carbon cycling.


• Publish research in high-impact scientific journals and present findings at international conferences.

What We are Looking For


• PhD in terrestrial or aquatic biogeochemistry, environmental science, soil science, or a related field.


• Expertise in carbon flux measurements, nutrient cycling, or aquatic-terrestrial carbon interactions.


• Proficiency in analytical techniques such as spectroscopy, stable isotopes, or chromatography.


• Strong quantitative skills (experience with R, Python, or MATLAB preferred).


• Willingness to conduct intensive fieldwork in tropical environments.


• Track record of peer-reviewed publications and excellent communication skills.


• Ideally the candidate can speak Bahasa Indonesia or Bahasa Melayu, due to extensive fieldwork required in Sarawak and Kalimantan with local communities.
