The Role

We are looking for a dynamic and inspirational teacher of Junior school drama to deliver a high-quality programme. Collaborating across year group teams and engaging the parent community is an essential element of the role. The successful candidate will be an experienced drama practitioner and a creative and innovative individual who is passionate developing this subject further.


Key Responsibilities


1. Leadership:

  • Ensure that all public policy and curriculum documents are accurate and uptodate.
  • Create long, medium- and short-term plans for the Junior School drama department and monitor the impact.
  • Ensure that the Department provides a wide range of CCA and production opportunities for all students in the Junior School.
  • Be responsible for line managing the Drama Assistant.
  • Be responsible for supporting, training and developing colleagues who support the teaching of drama in the Junior School.
  • Organise and arrange occasional initiatives (which may include presentations to parents) whenever the subject is part of a school curriculum focus.
  • Ensure quality drama displays in the common and central areas of the school, screens and drama studios.


2. Planning and development:

  • Keep abreast of current developments in the curriculum.
  • To consider such developments in the context of the school’s philosophy for the curriculum as a whole.
  • Liaise with other Heads of Year/Departments to develop and promote cross-curricular links.
  • Liaise with the Head of Drama in the Senior School to ensure continuity and progression.
  • Coordinate calendar, timetable and facility planning alongside the Junior Arts team (Music, Art and Drama) and the Heads of Music & Drama in the Infant and Senior School.
  • Plan and lead class performances in year groups in consultation with Heads of Year, including the planning and leading of a collaborative arts production for Year 6.
  • Plan and manage a wide range of performance opportunities in drama throughout the school to cater for students of all ages and abilities.
  • Promote drama through appropriate internal and external opportunities such as achievement assemblies and community performances.
  • Liaise with Technicians, Theatre and Events and Operations teams to ensure efficient organisation of performances and events.

3. Teaching and Learning:

  • Promote independent learning by encouraging the use of teaching and learning strategies which develop the competence and confidence of every student.
  • Ensure high standards of teaching and learning in drama through detailed and effective planning and assessment.
  • Develop and maintain forms of assessment, record keeping and reporting.
  • Provide enrichment opportunities for Junior School children beyond the Curriculum and Co-curricular programme including, but not limited to, visiting artists and ISTA festivals (Hosting and participating).

4. Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Set expectations and targets for those teaching drama in relation to standards of teaching and learning.
  • Be responsible for the analysis and interpretation of relevant school data to inform policies, practices and teaching methods.
  • Monitor teaching standards within drama lessons and to use this analysis to identify both effective practice and areas for improvement.
  • Be responsible for ensuring students’ work within the department is regularly assessed.
  • Be responsible for the use of information gained from assessment, recording and reporting procedures to generate further improvement in student achievement, including Parent Teacher Conferences and End of Year Reports.

5. Management of resources:

  • Resource the subject within an allocated budget, including: ordering materials and stock; checking, controlling, distributing materials and stock on arrival; maintaining an inventory of equipment, and ensuring such equipment is maintained.
  • Be responsible for assessing needs and priorities in departmental accommodation and resources.
  • Be responsible for recruiting support staff within the department, where appropriate.
  • Liaise with the TTS Foundation to obtain grants for additional visitors and special projects.

6. Specific Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for reporting any concerns about a child to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • To embrace the School’s commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Support the CPD Leader (Deputy Headteacher) in leading and managing the continuous professional development of staff which reflects both the needs of the individual and the school in order to drive improvement.
  • Ensure that health and safety requirements are taken heed of in the planning and delivery of the subject.
