The Straits Times interactive graphics team is looking for a Data Visualisation Developer to join our team in the newsroom. You would be working alongside journalists, developers, designers, and editors to create original digital content for our readers. If you have a passion for web development, storytelling, journalism, and the craft of designing digital experiences, please apply to join our dynamic team.


Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with journalists, designers and data visualisation developers to understand requirements and translate them into visual designs that accurately represent the underlying data, editorial angle or product request
  • Design and create data-driven visualisations, including charts, graphs, maps, and interactive web applications
  • Utilise technologies such as Svelte, React, D3.js, or similar front-end frameworks for building interactive and responsive data visualisations
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continually improve and innovate our interactive content.
  • Carry out investigative journalism/research with journalists using data, including conducting interviews and finding/verifying data sources
  • Use various statistics and data science tools for data parsing, scraping and wrangling
  • Manage workflow and process for data-driven stories in the newsroom
  • Thoroughly test and troubleshoot interactive graphics to ensure functionality and performance standards are met.

Requirement

  • Proficiency in front-end web development technologies such as Svelte or React, d3.js, WebGL
  • Strong understanding of data analysis and statistical methods to extract meaningful insights for editorial storytelling purposes
  • Knowledge of AWS services for data storage, retrieval, and integration.
  • Proficiency in Figma, Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects) and 3D software are a plus
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), spatial analysis tools
  • Experience with augmented reality (AR) design is a plus.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality, accurate work.
  • Familiarity with the news industry and an interest in current events.
  • Experience in managing time effectively to meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining the quality of work.
  • Prior experience in a data visualisation role / visual storytelling would be preferred
