Roles & Responsibilities

The Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) is the primary scientific platform in Singapore as part of the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme. It aims to unite researchers, regulators, and industry members to strengthen Singapore's expertise in food safety science and R&D, ensuring the safety and economic value of the country's food supply. FRESH will focus on research and talent development to enhance local food regulatory capabilities, introduce innovative food products to the market, and promote Singaporean food standards globally. Collaborators in this initiative include the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), A*STAR, and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The role of the Senior Research Fellow in Fermentation at FRESH involves supporting research in food safety science and advancements in fermentation techniques (solid state and submerged). Ideal for individuals passionate about innovative research, the position requires expertise in food microbiology, fermentation, and -omics analytical platforms. The incumbent will collaborate closely with the FRESH Director to develop risk assessments in food safety based on fermentation and conduct comparative studies related to food digestion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop solid state and submerged fermentation technology
  • Plan and execute experiments
  • Oversee research progress
  • Manage the laboratory environment and procurement processes
  • Communicate research initiatives within the FRESH, FST, and NTU food communities
  • Lead the development of standardized lab SOPs and workflows

Job Requirements:

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant field like microbiology, food science, or technology
  • Preference for candidates with expertise in food fermentation technology, biotechnology, and -omics analytical platforms, including in silico analysis
  • Familiarity with physiologically-based pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PBPK-PD) model structure is a plus
  • Previous hands-on experience in a food laboratory setting
  • Strong background in food-related research
  • Capable of navigating roles that combine academic, industry, and regulatory perspectives
