Bachelor's Degree in an IT related field, or at least seven years of equivalent experience working in the Internet peering and embedded caching space, with strong understanding of the negotiation strategies involved in working with ISPs from all around the world.
- Technical experience with CDN architecture and embedded caching, and solid understanding of related topics in the datacenter space.
- Knowledge of IP peering ecosystems
- Strong writing skills and strong communications skills
The IP BDs on the Interconnect team are responsible for delivering the interconnect capacity connecting the Amazon network to the internet.
The interconnect capacity comes in 4 major flavors - settlement-free (SFI) peering, paid peering, paid transit and embedded caching deployments.
IP BD's primary internal customers include Prime Video, CloudFront and AGA.IP BDs work closely with the Internet Edge Engineering team (IEE) and the two teams collaborate to ensure that there is sufficient interconnect capacity to serve all of Amazon's needs and business objectives.
IP BDs also work closely with New Region Planning, New Country Planning and Edge Planning to support interconnect requirements.
IP BDs are externally facing and must have a deep understanding of global telecommunication ecosystems, network architecture/engineering and interconnect market dynamics.
IP BDs are not network engineers but are expected to have a strong understanding of IP network engineering, particularly on the mechanics of establishing network to network connectivity using BGP and IP traffic engineering.
Their counterparts in these interconnect discussions are often network engineers or engineering managers, thus our IP BDs need to be capable of having in-depth technical conversations.
A regional manager on the IP BD team is responsible for leading a team of regional experts who can achieve those interconnect goals, SFI or paid.
IP BDs that are hired into the team bring local expertise, market knowledge and often have pre-existing relationships with relevant external network operators.
Those pre-existing relationships are not a hard requirement for the job but are highly advantageous.It is then the job of the IP BD regional manager to guide, coach and develop the IP BDs to have the necessary skills and knowledge to maintain or establish the necessary relationships, often by using his or her own pre-existing relationships.
In any regional team, IP BDs are unlikely to be proficient across both the necessary technical capabilities and commercial/legal experience.
IP BDs may not have all of the market knowledge from day 1.
The IP BD regional manager must exercise business judgement to ensure the deals that the team does make sense and what direction negotiations should be taking.
The regional manager owns the over-arching strategy for interconnect in that region in which individual ISP or country strategies for interconnect are derived.
Because each region has its own business nuances, it is important for the regional BD manager to deeply understand these so that the regional interconnect strategy aligns with business operations.
About the teamAmazon connects its global network to many external networks on the Internet in order to serve content and services for its many customers.
This interconnect capacity comes in two forms - through direct peering with the destination network, or through the use of an intermediary network providing transit to the whole of the Internet.
The AGIS team is responsible for managing the relationships with all these external networks to obtain the required connectivity in the right locations.
Peering relationships are either settlement-free (SFI) or paid peering. The majority of our peering relationships are SFI.Otherwise, the team will enter into commercial negotiations and contracting to acquire the necessary paid peering or paid transit capacity.
Additionally, the team is also responsible for negotiating and completing embedded caching contracts to deploy embedded caching platforms inside these external networks.
