About the role
The Market Analysis team sits in the Commercial Product Group and is responsible for generating short
- and medium-term market insights (today to 5 years) including supply and competitor analysis; demand forecasts including those for downstream sectors; trading support; and price forecasting using all manner of techniques. The team focus is to leverage these insights and analysis to support Commercial decision-making and generate value across Sales & Marketing, Procurement and Marine & Logistics. The Market Analysis team also provide short
- and medium-term market context and commodity price forecasts to the broader Group.

We are looking for a

Principal Analyst - Procurement, Marine & Logistics to join our Procurement, Marine & Logistics Market Analysis team. The role will focus on marine and logistics and their intersection with our energy transition and procurement businesses.

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Procurement, Marine & Logistics, you will:

  • Stakeholder engagement is key
  • work with our marine and logistics teams and the broader commercial team to prioritize areas of focus and identify actionable, commercial opportunities.
  • Leveraging external and internal expertise, maintain and further develop both tactical and strategic analysis and insights for our owned and chartered dry bulk carriers in particular Capes, container ships, trucks and trains where Rio Tinto operates etc.
  • Maintain and develop tracking metrics to provide leading indicators for shortmedium term supply/demand over the 0 to 3 years time horizon, as well as longer term incorporating views on energy, costs, supply chain.
  • Analyse global freight and logistics markets related to our global operations and cost base on both a spot and contract basis. Provide insight and commentary on market movements that relate to our procurement spend and our suppliers and supply chains.
  • Monitor competitors stated strategies and objectives collaboration required with wider commercial and trading team; develop a deep understanding of new technology and developments particularly in the energy transition space including hydrogen, ammonia and other renewable fuels.
  • Track and monitor appropriate benchmarks for cost inputs globally, providing negotiation support and advice where needed to business units.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • University degree in either a marine/logistics or commercial discipline, a background in energy and/or economics/accounting/finance would be advantageous.
  • Minimum 6 years relevant experience within a marine/chartering/logistics focused MNC, professional services/consulting/broking firm, ideally with deep expertise in marine (bulk carriers), containers, trucks/rail.
  • Demonstrated and deep understanding within shipping/logistics/supply chain.
  • Managing, maintaining, and redesigning complex Excel models.
  • A strong industry network, as well as maintaining and expanding such, is essential for the success of this position.
  • Automated data visualisation reports in Power BI.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English) are essential.
