We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a
Head of Wholesale Credit Risk Management.


Role Purpose


The Head of Wholesale Credit Risk Management (WCRM) is responsible for managing all credit risk arising in HSBC Singapore's Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets and Private Banking Business.


This encompasses the following activities:

  • In the Credit Risk space, the assessment of domestic & cross border corporate credit facilities under Global Banking (GB) and Commercial Banking (CMB) for general corporate, trade & commodity finance, project finance, leveraged acquisition finance, capital market transactions, treasury products.
  • It is also responsible for the management of Financial Institution, NBFI and sovereign portfolios as well as credit risk coverage for the Private Banking (PB) portfolio, including specialised lending and lombard lending.
  • The function is responsible for portfolio monitoring, early warning signals and management of stressed accounts / workouts under the Special Credit Unit (SCU).


The job holder is responsible to lead a team of risk management specialists (each managing an area of specific product risk / customer segment), to manage the performance of the wholesale portfolio of HSBC Singapore and to facilitate HSBC Singapore's strategy for growth.


Principal Accountabilities

  • Credit underwriting
  • Ensure WCRM team's strategic vision and forward looking approach, achieve strong asset quality across CMB, GB, FI/NBFI, and GPB clients customer segments and ensure well balanced Risk Reward / Shareholder Value aligned to HSBC's risk appetite
  • Work with Businesses to identify early warning signals and manage Worry/Watch/Monitor accounts. Manage stressed accounts and minimize impairment provisions on B&D account
  • Identify emerging risks in the portfolio, geography or industry sectors through portfolio management strategies and initiate mitigation strategies
  • Contribute to the development and achievement of HSBC's AOP / Country Strategic Plan (CSP)
  • Adopt and implement Group / Regional guidelines
  • Overseas the responsibilities of GPB Credit team to ensure quality risk management in GPB credit portfolio, manage concentration risk. Provide guidance to GBP credit Risk team on specific credit request and general credit policy matters
  • Manage all Portfolio Management, Stress Testing (including Climate Risk Stress Tests) and IFRS9 Impairment activities

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Ensuring Businesses understand, accept and implement wholesale credit policies and incorporate risk issues as integral to Business activities
  • Maintain a professional relationship with Businesses, Risk function of other Group offices, regulators, auditors, professionals, rating agencies and other industry bodies
  • Work with regional and global risk teams to standardize and improve risk processes including the implementation of strategic projects and systems
  • Provide critical assessment of new wholesale products and services, ensuring they meet Group Risk principles and strategy as well as promote Singapore's quality growth plans within HSBC's global strategy

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Effectively communicate with Singapore's senior management and Global Businesses to support sustainable business growth and business / risk management initiatives
  • Build and maintain a strong network of Wholesale Credit & Market Risk specialists within the country
  • Ensure appropriate investment towards building team morale as well as professional training on an ongoing basis, for Risk managers as well as the wider risk team
  • Lead the Risk People Agenda including succession planning, talent management, performance management and improving employee engagement
