The Humanities and Social Studies Education (HSSE)Department at NIE/NTU combines the expertise of scholarsand experienced education specialists in history, geography andsocial studies to deliver impactful research and teacher educationprogrammes. We offer an extensive range of courses focused on bothclassroom pedagogy and disciplinary content relevant to history,geography, and social studies educators, curriculum specialists,undergraduate teaching scholars and higher degree students. HSSEscholarship in educational practice ─ as well as in the disciplinesof history, geography, and social studies ─ is relevant to a rangeof 21st Century issues fundamental to the preparation ofprofessionals interested in teaching careers, school leadership andeducational specialisations. HSSE also has several collaborativeprojects focused on sustainability and disciplinary thinking thatfocus on innovations designed to lead practice and guide change ineducation.

HSSE Department intends to appoint aLecturer or Senior Lecturer in Social Studies Education, with aninterest in Asia and comparative approaches, focusing on any of thefollowing:
  • Social StudiesPedagogy
  • CitizenshipStudies
  • Multiculturalism
  • Inquiry-BasedLearning


This positionwill provide the suitable applicant with opportunity to teachsocial studies education and conduct research in his / her area ofspecialization at the world's #15-ranked university (QS WorldUniversity Rankings 2025). In addition, there will be uniqueopportunities to work with academic geographers, historians andeducational research scientists and explore social studieseducation research in primary and secondary school contexts throughcollaborative research projects.

Requirements

Successful candidates must haveminimally:
  • A doctorate in SocialStudies, Social Studies Education, Education or a related fieldfrom an internationally acclaimed institution at the time ofappointment
  • Specialization in any of thefollowing areas with an interest in Asia and in comparativeapproaches: social studies pedagogy, citizenship studies,multiculturalism, inquiry-based learning, or a relatedfield
  • Evidence of outstandingteaching
  • Evidence of research in the area(s) ofspecialization
  • A strong commitment to andaptitude for teaching at both undergraduate and graduatelevels
  • Familiarity with the Singapore SocialStudies curriculum and the Singapore education system would behighly advantageous
  • Excellent interpersonal,communication and technology skills and dedication to academicteaching excellence andcollegiality


In addition,candidates seeking appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturershould demonstrate
  • Leadership incurriculum development at a programmaticlevel
  • Leadership in teachinginnovations
  • Leadership in research in thearea(s) ofspecialization


Responsibilities

Successfulcandidates will be expected to:
  • TeachSocial Studies Education courses in HSSE's initial teacherpreparation and graduate programmes, including supervision ofstudent teachers in their teaching practice in school andsupervision of graduate research and courseworkstudents
  • Conceptualize and implement strategiesfor professional development in Social Studies Education forin-service teachers in Singapore
  • Developsustainable and innovative pedagogies in the area of Social StudiesEducation
  • Develop research in the area(s) ofspecialization including applying for grants and publishing inreputable journals or other outlets in the field of Social StudiesEducation
  • Establish professional connectionswith local and international researchers and practitioners inSocial Studies Education
  • Share expertise withNIE colleagues through various platforms
  • Assistin administrative work in the Department and inNIE
