Organisational Context The Legal Office is organised into three branches: LEGA – Administrative and Employment Law LEGC – Contractual and Constitutional Law LEGM – Maritime, Transport and Insurance Law This position is a Legal Officer P3 in LEGA, headquartered in Rome, Italy. Other branches may also be considered. Job Purpose Handle a range of legal services, including interpreting and applying legal instruments governing WFP activities and operations. Key Accountabilities Conduct extensive legal research and analysis on multidisciplinary complex matters. Review legal documents, identify key issues, similarities and inconsistencies, and present findings to support decision‑making. Draft legal opinions, background papers, studies, memoranda, reports and other legal documents. Prepare and review agreements and contracts with public and private entities; negotiate and settle claims and disputes. Identify potential liabilities and assist in risk management across WFP activities. Prepare and assess briefs of evidence and provide recommendations to facilitate legal analysis. Provide legal advice, prepare legal briefs, and represent WFP in tribunals or administrative proceedings. Assist senior legal officers in committees, task forces, expert working groups and other bodies. Other duties as required. Qualifications and Key Requirements Education: Advanced university degree in Law, or first degree with additional relevant experience; must be qualified to practice or admitted to a recognised bar or law society. Experience: Minimum 5 years of progressive legal experience, including 3 years in an international context; litigation experience is an asset. Language: Fluency (Level C) in English; intermediate (Level B) in a second official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, or Portuguese). Desired Characteristics Deep knowledge of legal principles, concepts and procedures for legal document review and processing. Proficiency in legal research sources and techniques, and ability to draft legal papers. Knowledge of tribunal processes and procedures. Business acumen and strategic thinking. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Terms and Conditions International professional position (non‑rotational) open to all nationalities. Fixed‑term contract with one‑year probation; open to internal and external candidates.
