Group Chief Operating Office (GCOO) is a critical capability for the Group comprising Business COO, Operations, Procurement and Real Estate, Business Risk & Resilience including (Business Continuity, Protective Security, Non-Financial Risk, and ServCo) and Change Execution. GCOO is the execution engine of the Group. As well as managing & controlling the business, the GCOO organisation enables business strategy through transformation and optimises operational efficiency. This GCOO Change Execution function is critical within this context leading the implementation of GCOO’s most significant, large scale, complex strategic programmes. The purpose of the Change Execution function is to enable colleagues across HSBC to deliver safe and secure services to all our customers, colleagues, and the Bank itself. It also oversees the effective execution of strategic M&A transactions on behalf of the Group in conjunction with the Group Head of Strategy & Corporate Development. We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Head of Performance and Engagement, Change Execution, GCOO. Role Purpose The Head of Performance & Engagement is a senior leadership role which will report to the Global Head of Change Execution. This is a key leadership position, being a member of the Global CE Leadership team. This position is responsible for managing the strategy build-out, performance and people management and operational requirements of the CE Function. The successful candidate will be a trusted advisor to the Head of CE – facilitate strategic decisions, mediate and align across senior Global Business and Global Infrastructure colleagues, mitigating risks and issues as they arise. This role will have responsibilities across GCOO Change Execution, supporting the GCOO Head of Change Execution and the CE leadership team. Head of Performance and Engagement to the Global Head of Change Execution Defining function’s strategy and objectives at the direction of the Global Head of CE and the CE LT ensuring appropriate prioritisation and coverage standards. Driving sub-function governance, business management activities such as business planning, strategy, operational performance, control and budget, communications, and innovation globally Driving the People Strategy in collaboration with HR including monitoring of hiring, retention, training and development Build learning and certification programmes that uplift skills, leadership capability, and organisational maturity. Managing people agenda and capability requirements Financial Resource Planning incorporating business and regulatory demand Ensures operational performance is measured and monitored – developing and monitoring OKRs / KPIs to assess effectiveness of CE operations and initiatives. Ownership of CE scorecard and inputs into GCOO scorecard Defining and managing both the internal and external communications for CE Owning the Service Catalogue which defines the activities and service provided by the function The role holder will need to be effective at influencing and communication with large number of internal (first line, senior management/second line, audit) to achieve objectives. Leadership Span: A balanced leadership style; able to flex approach based on context Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders Accountable to work closely with the Market and Lines of Business Heads of Performance / Delivery / Transformation, CDO and CCO, ensuring the effective management of the function. Cost & FTE Management: Appropriate oversight, planning, control and reporting of functional annual budgets and facilitation of recruitment Data: Ensure robust data governance and quality standards are maintained. Ensure operational performance is measured and monitored. People Management: Drive key people process in partnership with HR, including communications, performance, and compensation. Oversee governance and reporting secretariat activities. Customers / Stakeholders Lead / liaison with relevant stakeholders within GCOO, Global Business and Infrastructure teams to provide a forward looking, business focused bank wide change management function. Lead and responsibility for communications programme for Change Execution which includes engagement, influence and eliciting feedback from appropriate stakeholders. Leadership & Teamwork Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with all stakeholders in country, region, and central teams. Lead, develop and motivate an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans, succession plans and reward and recognition practices to cultivate an environment that supports diversity, reflects the HSBC brand, and improves employee engagement. Responsible and accountable for the performance management of the team, using relevant performance management tools, ensuring timely action is taken to improve underperformance, to maximise effectiveness of the team. Ensure development activities are a core priority and enable all team members to take reasonable time for learning and developmental activities. Ensure the team is resourced to headcount plan, sufficient to meet the demands and opportunities of the business. Functional Knowledge The individual would be expected to have a varied career to date across both risk and business roles. Proven leadership experience and the gravitas and ability to build connections and work collaboratively across boundaries and to provide sound counsel to senior leaders of HSBC. Proven ability to formulate, disseminate and implement firm-wide strategic initiatives. Ability to manage and mitigate operational risk effectively. Excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with key players in industry and regulators with aim of influencing policy decisions to protects banks interests. Ideal if jobholder understands HSBC Group and its strategy, structures, and processes. Resourceful, creative, and inquisitive approach to dealing with high levels of complexity and ambiguity. Highly motivated, entrepreneurial, and autonomous, with the sensibility to prioritise and negotiate under pressure. Able to operate effectively against uncertainty and on unfamiliar ground. Strong knowledge of all Global Businesses and Global Functions (functionally, operationally, and financially) Strategic thinker and pragmatic implementer able to develop efficient methods of bringing about change. Role Attributes Broad and comprehensive understanding of concepts and principles within multiple disciplines or a fast changing discipline The role requires a comprehensive understanding of how all value units / products / regions / legal entities collectively integrate, alongside a comprehensive knowledge of the industry in order to contribute to the commercial objectives of HSBC. Management responsibilities for a sizeable team of professionals (including responsibility for budget, and planning) Covers a wide range of diverse activities that require complex judgements and solutions based on conceptual thought and strategic vision and analysis Is proactive in developing ideas, continuously searching for improvements in techniques which add value to the business and has full responsibility for implementation.
