Overview

Head of Software Engineering – Mission-Critical Systems is a leadership role on the founding team of a purpose-driven startup building secure, cloud-native platforms to power digital transformation in the public sector. This role combines leadership with hands-on technical work, including coding, architecture design, and mentoring high-performing teams to deliver fast, reliable, and scalable systems.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead the end-to-end architecture and engineering strategy for mission-critical digital platforms.
  • Build secure, scalable systems using modern cloud-native technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Be hands-on: design, prototype, and contribute to code where needed – especially in the early stages.
  • Establish engineering best practices, DevSecOps pipelines, and Agile delivery frameworks.
  • Recruit, mentor, and inspire a multidisciplinary team of engineers, DevOps, and architects.
  • Collaborate closely with founders, product leads, and stakeholders to bring bold ideas to life.
  • Ensure platforms meet public sector requirements for compliance, integration, and resilience.
  • Continuously explore emerging technologies (AI/ML, automation, data analytics) to future-proof the stack.
  • Cultivate a strong engineering culture built on ownership, learning, and impact.
What We’re Looking For
  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with 5+ in senior technical leadership roles.
  • Deep technical expertise in modern cloud platforms, APIs, microservices, and CI/CD tooling.
  • A builder’s mindset: hands-on, proactive, and unafraid to dive deep into technical challenges.
  • Proven success scaling platforms in high-stakes or regulated environments (GovTech, SaaS, Fintech, etc.).
  • Experience in early-stage companies, startups, or innovation teams within larger orgs.
  • Strong understanding of public sector tech needs, compliance (PDPA, MAS TRM, etc.), and integration standards.
  • A pragmatic leader who can make trade-offs, move fast, and guide teams through uncertainty.
