Main Purpose: To support Trafigura’s developing business across the APAC region by providing legal advice on contentious, transactional, and regulatory matters related to Trafigura’s commercial trading activities. These include trading physically and financially settled oil, oil products, bulk commodities (coal, iron ore), non-ferrous concentrates, refined metals, power, and carbon. Additionally, provide legal support for ancillary elements like banking finance, structured trade finance, exchange trading (physical and derivative), and transportation, warehousing, and storage of commodities. The role requires delivering clear, succinct, and practical legal advice often under tight time constraints and commercial pressures.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Key Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact in the region for legal services, including:
  • Contentious Advice: Assist in all stages of disputes, managing arbitration, civil litigation, mediation, and enforcement, mainly related to trading and shipping disputes, but also other disputes or investigations as needed.
  • Transactional Advice: Advise on joint venture agreements, share purchase agreements, shareholders’ agreements, structured trade finance documentation, prepayments, banking facilities, sale and purchase contracts, and related documentation.
  • Regulatory Advice: Provide guidance on applicable regulations across the APAC region, including sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption, financial regulation, derivatives, and futures trading.
  • Identify key legal risks, report proactively to management and stakeholders, and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • Collaborate with the Global Legal Team to provide excellent legal service in a fast-paced environment.
  • Manage external legal advice and support as needed.
  • Build strong relationships across the business and provide legal training on issues and compliance policies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Legal qualification with at least 7 years post-qualification experience.
  • Qualified in the UK, Singapore, Australia, or New Zealand, with credible private practice experience in those jurisdictions.
  • Preferably experienced with complex contentious matters in commodity trading and in-house experience in a trading or commercial environment, with international and cross-border exposure.
  • Broad legal skills, good IT and organizational skills, and excellent command of English.
