Senior/ Forensic Scientist

Overview

The Home Team Science & Technology Agency (HTX) is a premier Science and Technology Agency that unites science and engineering capabilities across the Home Team Departments to transform homeland security and keep Singapore safe. The role is pivotal within the chemistry team, focusing on forensic chemistry to support investigations and intelligence for Home Team Departments. The role involves designing, conceptualising, and implementing inventive methodologies that transcend conventional forensic science.

Responsibilities

• Research & Development: Conduct horizon scanning to identify emerging technologies and methodologies in forensic chemistry that can revolutionise chemical analysis of evidence such as toxic substances, materials, and biological samples to provide intelligence to Home Team Departments and other agencies.
• Independently lead research initiatives, developing expertise and instrumental capabilities of analytical instruments such as LCMS, mass spectrometry or NMR, and validate novel forensic techniques to address investigatory needs of Home Team Departments.
• Oversee and lead the full project lifecycle, from concept initiation and planning to execution, milestone tracking, and effective communication across multiple teams.
• Forge collaborations with national and international stakeholders to advance HTX's interests.
• Foster a robust network with pivotal stakeholders within Home Team Departments and HTX.
• Cultivate partnerships with forensic counterparts, academia, and industry peers locally and globally to drive the innovation of new methodologies, practices, and products.
• Manage ethical submissions, including institutional review board applications, and drive corresponding communications.
• Lead and manage a small team of researchers, providing guidance to enable progress for a senior-level position.

Administrative, Quality Assurance, And Workplace Safety

• Handle administrative and managerial tasks within the laboratory, including procurement, equipment maintenance, and inventory management, to ensure smooth laboratory operations.
• Engage in laboratory quality assurance and workplace safety activities, ensuring rigorous adherence to established quality and safety standards.
• Participate in agency-required activities, including trials and training with internal stakeholders.

Qualifications

• BSc (Hons), MSc, or PhD in Chemistry, Toxicology, Forensic Science, or related disciplines.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant industry or research experience in chemistry/toxicology.
• Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory/leadership experience in leading teams and managing projects.
• Strong hands-on experience with analytical instruments, particularly LCMS, mass spectrometry (tandem MS and/or high resolution MS), or NMR (1D, 2D and qNMR).
• Proficient in analytical chemistry techniques, basic statistical tools in analytical chemistry, and data interpretation.
• Knowledge of research methodology and practical experience in executing scientific research projects in academia or industry.
• Experience with structural elucidation of small molecules, identification of unknown substances, and/or untargeted analysis workflows is advantageous.
• Knowledge of good laboratory practice or ISO17025 is advantageous.
• Enthusiasm for pioneering scientific innovations aligned with the Home Team mission.
• Aptitude for establishing international partnerships to bolster HTX's reputation; actively seek networks and collaborations with fellow experts.
• Strong problem-solving ability, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to perform under high-pressure deadlines.
• Leadership experience is desirable.
• Able to address operational exigencies beyond conventional office hours.
• Contract terms: All new hires are appointed on a two-year contract in the first instance and will be assessed for permanent tenure over time based on performance.
