Legal Counsel

Role Overview The role is critical in supporting all legal and regulatory matters for Liberty Singapore, covering both retail and commercial/specialty products. The role reports to the Co‑Heads of Legal Singapore and sits within the Legal team as part of Liberty International Insurance APAC. Responsibilities Support all legal and regulatory matters as assigned by the role report and other designated assignees. Provide day‑to‑day management of all aspects of the legal function, including regulatory/legal issues related to insurance and reinsurance (contract review, policy wordings), general corporate and commercial advisory work, corporate litigation, dispute management and resolution, and drafting, negotiating, reviewing, and approving agreements and legal reports. Advise on local legal matters (civil, criminal, outsourcing, data protection, etc.) and on any changes or developments in the law when appropriate. Maintain current knowledge of legal issues and developments in the law; evaluate legal trends for their impact on the company/group. Enhance systems to efficiently disseminate information and set up and maintain a legal library of legal advice and contracts. Represent and advise on substantial legal and business transactions requiring original and creative legal endeavour, such as key vendor, distribution, M&A agreements and special projects. Perform comprehensive research and analysis in collaboration with external and internal counsel on areas such as insurance regulation, litigation, employment matters, IT, real estate and compliance. Maintain the company’s licence (e.g., business scope extension) and relationships with regulators in conjunction with local and regional management. Develop an approved panel list of counsel as needed. Provide legal support on insurance claims review when needed. In conjunction with Regional & Global Legal, oversee and monitor all intellectual property rights. Report all issues to Local & Regional Legal per reporting protocols. Perform periodic international protocol audits. Other ad‑hoc duties as required. Competencies & Experience Singapore Qualified lawyer Minimum 2‑5 years legal PQE experience at a law firm or as in‑house counsel. Excellent analytical, legal writing and communication skills. Ability to communicate and explain complex issues clearly and succinctly. Ability to build trust and effectively network with internal and external stakeholders. Professional and approachable with a "can‑do" attitude to interact successfully with senior management, colleagues and external suppliers. Strong relationship and inter‑personal skills. Strong business acumen and instinct. Client service mentality with an ability to challenge and probe to achieve optimal client outcomes. Integrity and high ethical standards, acting with discretion at all times. Ability to manage time and projects, meet deadlines and prioritise. Self‑motivated, a strong team player, keen sense of ownership and desire for continuous improvement. Strong written and verbal skills and an effective communicator with confidence, maturity and gravitas at senior level. Ability to work proactively under own initiative, prioritise, handle time pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously with flexibility. PC skills – ability to use legal entity management systems and other system packages, proficient at learning new technology and software. Familiarity with corporate operations and SBU objectives.
