What the role is:
The National Heritage Board (NHB) preserves, presents and promotes the cultural heritage of Singapore, and the Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC) is an institution of NHB. It is a purpose-built facility for the storage and conservation of the National Collection comprising artworks and artefacts. Its mission is to care for, manage and facilitate access to the National Collection.
What you will be working on:
Paintings Section
Working in close collaboration with the members of the Paintings section, the essential job functions are described as follows:
1. Carry out conservation assessments, documentation and treatments on artworks and artefacts, primarily easel paintings from the National Collection, in accordance with HCC and NHB procedures for exhibits, loans and events across institutions of NHB and the Visual Arts Cluster.
2. Manage exhibition projects as liaison officer to cover conservation related as well as administrative aspects of exhibition preparations including preventive conservation.
3. Perform relevant conservation analysis and tests in contributing to the preservation and conservation knowledge of the NHB collections.
4. Provide supervision and training on the job to subordinates and others as required.
5. Participate in outreach activities that cater to a wide variety of audience groups, special interest groups and the public to promote awareness of conservation as required.
What we are looking for:
Requirements:
1. A master’s degree in Conservation with a speciality in Easel Paintings from a recognized training institution. An equivalent proven certification or experience will be considered.
2. Preferably with a minimum of 3 – 5 years’ work experience as a full-time staff.
3. Ability to carry out comprehensive and complex treatments with a high degree of manual dexterity and aesthetic sensitivity.
4. Ability to work independently and as a strong team player. Familiarity and experience with cultural materials in South East Asia and Asia preferred.
5. Demonstrates a broad experience in handling multi-cultural materials with sensitivity.
6. Ability to apply conservation principles and practices with sound contextual judgement, while collaboratively working with all relevant stakeholders.
7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills that facilitate teamwork and the ability to work across divisions and institutions.
8. Possess initiative with ability to multi-task, organise and prioritise work in given timeline Ability to adapt in a multi-lingual and multi-racial environment.
