Role Purpose:

The primary purpose of the role is leadership of the Asia Climate Tech Industry Practice. This encompasses commercial property including power, casualty, financial lines, construction and marine (P&C) insurance for renewable energy risks and their supply chain ecosystem. In addition, P&C insurance products for manufacturing, technology, installation, design and other servicing or consulting risks for companies where furthering progress in the transition to a net zero economy is the Insured’s key purpose. The insurance industry plays an important part in supporting the advancement of this critical industry and this role will lead Chubb’s effort in developing insurance solutions for low and zero emission technologies. This is a new role and a rebranding of Asia’s Clean Tech Industry Practice. The requirements of the role will evolve and grow over a 1-5 year period. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong competency and experience in the following areas:

Broker, Client and market engagement:

An important function of this role is to raise Chubb’s profile as a Renewable Energy and Climate Tech industry expert. Participation is expected in technical market bodies and would include speaking at client, broker, and industry forums/events and further industry thought leadership. 

A focus on driving new business and retention with brokers and clients, co-ordinating and engaging activity around key areas, such as pipeline and account retention. It will require focus around driving the pipeline of new business activity with BDMs and Distribution, both from short and long term perspective.

Technical Underwriting and Proposition Development

A core function of this role is for the successful candidate to use their climate industry knowledge and expertise to help inform line of business risk appetite through technical education on the technologies and risks associated with these clients and exposures.

Ultimately, the role must be capable of holding high levels of underwriting authority and be comfortable taking referral work from all of the line of business underwriting teams. This will also require close alignment with APAC IP and Product Line management plus COG to ensure appetite and underwriting strategy is understood and communicated, and underwriters are appropriately empowered. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the product offering and industry practice proposition to align with line of business, clients and distribution partners. This will require an entrepreneurial attitude in defining and building the practice in a rapidly developing and emerging sector of the business. 

People Management

Leadership and management of dotted line reports in a matrix structure, and in the longer term, as the book grows, also managing direct reports. In addition to managing the day to day technical or product needs of the wider Climate Tech team, the role will be required to ensure the talent and development needs of individual underwriters within the team are met. This will include coaching and mentoring the team to achieve collective and individual goals. Navigating periods of change and keeping focus on the importance of continuous improvement. The successful candidate for this role will be expected to build a positive team culture of passionate insurance and climate minded professionals. 

Planning & Execution 

A key function is to ensure that financials are planned and forecast accurately and that monthly production targets are met. Delivery and execution of the financial plan is a critical responsibility for this role. Moreover, accurate data is fed into the planning process. 

Key responsibilities

Leadership - Promote Chubb as a ‘Go to’ market for renewable energy and climate tech risks, including participation in technical market bodies, speaking at client, broker and industry forum/events Education – Use deep industry knowledge to educate both externally and internally on the risks associated with these exposures. Internally this should help inform risk appetite and acceptance.  Distribution – Promoting the Climate Tech industry practice externally with brokers and clients, including management of key strategic relationship and trading execution in conjunction with BDMs and Distribution leadership Product Development – Lead development of product targeted at Climate Tech risks in conjunction with Line of Business heads. Regularly conduct and share market research and intelligence on emerging exposures and market trends, using this information to inform our underwriting strategy and product development.  Marketing – Work with Marketing to launch the product & develop a marketing plan to promote the Industry Practice.  Underwriting –  Initially act as a focal point for opportunities, working with line of business to coordinate a response. Work towards achieving underwriting authority for core lines of business and taking referrals. Financial Target -  Delivering and exceeding the Climate Tech Industry Practice financial plan. Strategic focus   - Working closely and supporting the APAC IP Head, Line of Business Heads and COG to formulate and deliver on an underwriting strategy. Ensuring quality control within defined area of responsibility by undertaking quantitative underwriting reviews, running regular management meetings and peer reviews. 

Skills & Experience required:  

Extensive knowledge and passion for Climate change technologies Viewed as an SME in the market.  Strong interpersonal skills including verbal/written communication, relationship building and negotiation skills Take a hands-on approach for high-complexity opportunities, helping lead the in-country teams to appropriate underwriting decisions Excellent presentation and storytelling skills. Good financial literacy, and clear understanding of P&L. Advanced project management skills. Strong leadership skills, with the ability to influence in a matrix environment. Results driven with ability to work independently. Demonstrated success with strategy development and delivery.  Working knowledge of the insurance market and competitors, experience of dealing with brokers and clients, and underwriting experience is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
