KEY ACCOUNTABILITY (Main purpose of this job):

ELL teachers work under the leadership of the Primary or Secondary School Administration and the ELL Coordinator to maximise the English language learning outcomes for identified ELL students.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree and related teaching certificate/credential. Minimum of two years’ teaching experience in an ELL teaching environment. Experience related to guiding and supporting the acquisition of English as a part of an ELL language support programme. Experience in teaching English Language Acquisition within the PYP framework.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills. Awareness of cultural diversity and third culture families and an ability to communicate effectively with ELL students and their parents. Knowledge of recent research in the field of language acquisition and ELL education. Literate in the use of information technology and student achievement data. Skill in communicating an understanding of the strengths of the ELL programme within the grade level.

RESPONSIBILITIES (Key areas of responsibility):

Specific Responsibilities:

Advocate for ELL learners. Identify ELL students in the grade and develop a programme of intervention, support, and outcomes in collaboration with subject teachers. Closely monitor ELL students’ learning success and intervene as appropriate. Maintain record keeping in compiling a profile and outcomes achieved for each student. This record needs to be available to the ELL Coordinator at all times. Provide support for students as determined by an ongoing needs analysis. Provide ELL in-class and/or pull-out instruction to students in assigned grade level. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different learning needs and interests of students, including whole group (co-teaching) / small-group or individual personalized learning during opportune periods (SMART or other) throughout the week. Evaluate students’ language growth and maintain accurate records. Establish and maintain regular communication with parents of students in the programme to inform parents of concerns or progress. Continuously monitor LAQE (primary and secondary) and LLEM (secondary) courses, and modify learning engagements, assessments and learning outcomes as appropriate. Collaborate and/or co-plan with subject teachers to support differentiated instruction. Support assessment of a student’s English proficiency including ongoing internal moderation. In consultation with the ELL Coordinator, support the successful transition of students into the appropriate Secondary School mainstream programme. Develop appropriate curriculum (resources and strategies) to help ELL students acquire the English language. Included in this is understanding and applying the IB PYP/MYP Command terms. Assist in administering required language proficiency and academic achievement tests for determining placement or progress.

Professional Responsibilities:

Know, understand, and support the school’s Mission, Vision, Core Values, and Learning Principles. Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students in accordance with CIS administrative policies and divisional procedures. Participate in ELL team meetings and grade level meetings. Meet the expectations as outlined in the Primary/Secondary School ELL teacher Job Description and the CIS Teacher Standards. Contribute to community building, professional learning and staff meetings as required or assigned. Attend and participate in school-sponsored activities (i.e, back-to school night, open house, parent interviews and other activities customarily attended by classroom teachers and/or faculty members), which may be outside of regular school hours. Develop and implement an Individual Work Plan (IWP) under the direction of the ELL Coordinator, and complete the requirements of the Individual Work Plan (IWP).
